The trial of former Brazilian footballer Dani Alves, Barcelona/Reuters
The court in Barcelona today sentenced former soccer player Dani Alves to four and a half years in prison.
The 40-year-old Brazilian was found guilty of sexual assault, at the end of a police investigation and a trial that went on for a little over a year under the spotlight.
Alves was arrested in January 2023. He arrived in Spain to attend the funeral of his wife's mother, and the police rushed to arrest him before he returned to Mexico where he was playing at the time.
Alves has been considered for years the best right back in the world and one of the most prominent players in the industry.
He started his career in European football in Seville and after five and a half seasons, he was sold to Barcelona for an amount that came after bonuses to about 30 million euros.
In his 8 years at Barcelona, he won 6 championships, 4 cups and 3 Champions League trophies.
After Barcelona, Alves played for Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain and also won many titles.
In the years 2019-2021, Sao Paulo Fair returned to Brazil.
He later returned to Barcelona for one season as a secondary player and then signed with the Mexican Pumas, who released him after he was arrested.
Alves wore the uniform of the Brazilian national team for 16 years and represented it in 126 games - third place of all time.
He won two Copa Americas and two Confederations Cups with her, as well as a gold medal at the 2020 Olympics.
