Michael Reschke was technical director of FC Bayern between 2014 and 2017.

In the tz he talks about the consequences of the upcoming Tuchel separation.

Munich – FC Bayern is ending its collaboration with Thomas Tuchel (50) early.

The coach will leave the German record champions in the summer at the latest - a year before the end of his contract.

A successor is still unknown.

This uncertainty doesn't make Munich's squad planning any easier for the time after Tuchel.

Michael Reschke (66) also knows this.

The long-time Bundesliga manager, who was FC Bayern's technical director between 2014 and 2017, knows the business very well.

In the big

tz

interview he talks about the consequences of the upcoming Tuchel separation.

Tuchel's announcement could release energy at FC Bayern

Mr. Reschke, FC Bayern announced on Wednesday that they would be parting ways with Thomas Tuchel.

At the same time, the coach who has been criticized is allowed to continue until the summer.

Were you surprised by this decision?

Sometimes things just don't work out the way you want, even if the coach, team and club are of high quality.

This seems to be the case at Bayern at the moment, so this decision is not surprising.

In any case, it will be very exciting to see what this development does – for the team, Tuchel and the club.

I think it's very possible that this will release new energy in everyone.

Because the players don't play for or against the coach, but for the club, the fans and ultimately for themselves.

Max Eberl and Christoph Freund will plan the new Munich team in the spring.

Without having a successor for Tuchel up his sleeve.

How is that supposed to work?

A coach who moves to FCB always finds an entire team that he did not put together.

Squad planning and commitments are primarily the responsibility of the club and those responsible, because they involve sporting and economic decisions that are usually of strategic importance for several years.

And that's not the job of a trainer.

Doesn't a new coach have to be involved in the ideas for change?

Of course, it is optimal and generally common for the responsible trainer to be involved.

But Bayern are well advised to set the course in all directions now and cannot necessarily wait until the new coach is hired.

Your former protégé Xabi Alonso is considered the favorite for the coaching position at FC Bayern.

He's on a master course with Leverkusen.

How can a coach who is still under contract with another club theoretically help plan his new club's squad?

If Bayern decide on a new coach early on, they will certainly include him.

There are cell phones...

From my own experience with Guardiola or Ancelotti: How closely is a coach in Munich involved in transfer decisions?

It would be negligent not to involve such experts.

Pep Guardiola, for example, had a decisive influence on the signings of Thiago and Xabi Alonso.

He trusted us completely when it came to Kimmich and Coman's commitments.

How important is it for players to know who is coaching them at their new club?

There are almost always coach-player discussions when it comes to new signings, but a player does not sign his contract with the coach, but with the club and is also paid by them.

The club is always decisive.

And quite frankly: I have already experienced coach-player conversations that were very superficial and had more of an alibi character.

Back to Alonso: In 2014 you were instrumental in his move to FC Bayern.

You know him very well.

Are you surprised at the top work he does at your former club Leverkusen?

After his years at Bayern, his sporting quality, his extraordinary aura and sporting competence as well as his sensitive empathy were known to everyone in charge and the entire staff.

This was ultimately the reason why Rummenigge and Hoeneß, following my suggestion, seriously addressed the issue of appointing Xabi Alonso as sports director.

It was already clear to Xabi himself back then that he saw his future in coaching.

“You shouldn’t compare Xabi at all.

He does his thing and finds his way.”

Michael Reschke

You know all the top coaches in the world: what kind of guy is Alonso?

Every top coach has a whole range of special qualities.

But you shouldn't compare Xabi at all.

He does his thing and finds his way.

He certainly also benefited from working with Pep, Ancelotti, Benitez, Mourinho and other coaches because he always conscientiously reflected on their work.

But what matters is: Alonso is Alonso!

There has been a lot of unrest at FC Bayern for months.

Would you advise him to take on this job or should he continue to develop in peace at Leverkusen next season?

When Bayern really want to sign someone, they develop a lot of force, I experienced that myself in 2014 when I moved from Leverkusen to Munich.

They will certainly also try Xabi.

But I think he will stay in Leverkusen.

Fernando Carro and Simon Rolfes have given Xabi a great entry into the top level, he has a fantastic team and can rely on a great team of experts at his side.

Why should he change now?

He will continue to receive inquiries from the best clubs in the coming years and, as I see it, he is very calm about all of this.

Bayern and Zinédine Zidane: Would that work if things didn't work out with Alonso?

He is definitely a great personality who has already proven his class internationally.

What would happen if Bayern were without a new top coach at the start of training?

That will not happen.

Do fans have to fear that FC Bayern will become a new Manchester United because of the current chaos?

If we talk about unrest and a difficult, challenging situation instead of chaos, I'm there.

In the past, FCB has always used such phases to renew itself and develop a lot of energy.
