” Like these words from Michel Denisot, the qualifiers that come to mind are numerous to evoke the memory of Artur Jorge, who died this Thursday at the age of 78 as a result of a long illness.
First a prolific striker in Portugal (Porto, Coimbra, Benfica and Belenenses) and Portuguese international (16 caps, 1 goal), the man with the mustache then enjoyed a rich coaching career, notably guiding Porto to the title European champion in 1987. Briefly seen on the French benches at the head of Matra Racing, not a success, he returned to France in 1991 to take the reins of a PSG which had recently passed into the fold of
Canal+
.
It was on him that President Denisot was banking on to conquer titles that had been fleeing Paris since the coronation of champion under Gérard Houllier, in 1986. The club remained for seven years without a trophy and a 1990-91 season ended in the ninth D1 place.
