“Our goal is to reorient the sport with a new coach for the 2024/25 season,” explained FCB CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen.

Xabi Alonso new coach of FC Bayern?

The Spaniard stalls first

Xabi Alonso is said to have emerged as the Bavarian planners' preferred candidate.

And this is exactly who was confronted with questions about his future on Thursday during the press conference before the Bundesliga home game against Mainz 05 (Friday, 8:30 p.m.).

“You have some questions about my future, but I'm sorry, I have nothing new to say,” Alonso initially brushed off the probing words of the reporters present.

When asked whether he would also be Leverkusen coach next season, Alonso replied: “Exactly yes.”

FC Bayern beckons: Xabi Alonso is reminiscent of Niko Kovac

And further: “Right now I’m the coach, that’s for sure.

And I have no more to say about the future.

We will see.

It's not the right moment to talk about it." This statement is somewhat reminiscent of Niko Kovac's famous "As of now" when he was still in the employ of Eintracht Frankfurt and was asked whether he would become the new coach of FC Bayern.

The outcome is known.

According to current opinion, Alonso's statements do not appear to be definitive at all, and at least provide further breeding ground for the change rumors that have been going on for a long time.

Bayer Leverkusen on course for the championship under Xabi Alonso

The Spaniard is on course for a championship with Leverkusen.

The Werkself lead the Bundesliga table by eight points over Bayern.

Under Alonso's leadership, Leverkusen has now been unbeaten in 32 competitive games in a row (28 wins, 4 draws) - this is the record for a Bundesliga team and was previously only achieved by FC Bayern from 2019 to 2020 under Hansi Flick.

The sole record should be set against Mainz on Friday.

However, Leverkusen's impressive season and the associated excellent work that Alonso is doing are also arousing desire from other clubs.

Liverpool FC, from which Jürgen Klopp is leaving at the end of the season, is also said to be signaling great interest in working together.

Alonso played for Bayern and Liverpool during his playing days.
