The ÖSV records an unexpected end to his career: ski ace and climate activist Julian Schütter ends his career at just 25 years old.

Innsbruck/Vienna - In January 2023 he had a serious fall and tore his cruciate ligament, now he is drawing a line in the sand: Austrian ski racer Julian Schütter is ending his career at the age of 25.

Julian Schütter

Born:

March 14, 1998 (age 25), Schladming, Austria

Disciplines:

Downhill, Super-G

End of career:

February 22, 2024

World Cup starts:

11

Ski ace (25) draws a line: “No longer fulfills me”

“Last November, when I started training again after my knee injury, I realized that this sport no longer fulfilled me as much as it used to,” said Schütter, explaining his decision.

“I realized that it no longer seemed desirable for me to have a classic racing career and retire at 35 or 40.”

He has not competed in any races since his serious knee injury.

During his career he competed in eleven World Cup and 60 European Cup races.

Schütter gained notoriety primarily through his sporting achievements, but rather as an environmental activist.

No more balancing act: Julian Schütter no longer moves between environmental activism and the Ski World Cup.

ÖSV star Schütter is an environmental activist – but that has nothing to do with his resignation

He made headlines last year with an incendiary letter to the World Ski Federation FIS, which he accused of “greenwashing,” and received the support of many prominent ski stars.

He took the train to the races as often as possible, sacrificing considerable time as a result.

Schütter makes it clear: “My activism is not the reason for my resignation.” He made the decision to resign because of his physical problems - persistent disc problems and a long list of injuries made him rethink his position.

“I wrestled with myself for a long time and now decided that it was no longer worth it to me.”

Ski ace on ending his career at the age of 25: “Beneficial liberation”

The ski ace interviewed himself on his own homepage and speaks of a “beneficial liberation” and that he has no regrets.

Schütter will undergo surgery at the beginning of March and will then undergo rehabilitation.

He also wants to complete his studies and “continue to work for survival, although my hope for that is dwindling more and more,” said the ÖSV ace.

“Maybe I’ll just go traveling for a year or two.” The ÖSV thanked Schütter for his commitment over the past few years.

A Slovenian ski star also resigned in 2024 at the age of just 25 - for the second time.
