The Alpine Ski World Cup has suffered the next long-term failure: Michelle Niederwieser will no longer compete in any races due to injury.
Vorarlberg – The horror weekend in Cortina d'Ampezzo with many serious falls was already a month ago.
With a little delay, another “victim” comes to light: Michelle Niederwieser is retiring from the World Cup early due to an injury.

The cartilage: Michelle Niederwieser has to undergo surgery
“I have an appointment for cartilage surgery with Doctor Christian Fink in Hochrum on Friday,” Niederwieser is quoted by the
Kronen Zeitung
.
“Since I want to continue ski racing for longer, I have now decided to take this step.
I see it as an investment in my sporting future.” Extremely bitter for the Austrian, as she had achieved decent results during her debut season.
The 24-year-old Niederwieser has only been a member of Team Austria's A squad this season.
On her first World Cup descent on December 16, 2023 in Val d'Isère, Niederwieser finished in the points with 23rd place.
She took the same place a little later at the Zauchensee downhill run in January.

Mikaela Shiffrin had a harder time in Cortina than Michelle Niederwieser
The speed specialist also scored points in the Super-G, Niederwieser's flagship discipline.
More meters will not be added initially.
And that even though her fall in Cortina d'Ampezzo was pretty unspectacular - the ÖSV athlete immediately got back up and crossed the finish line herself.
Other downhill hunters had things worse a month ago.
Like the superstar Mikaela Shiffrin, for example.
The American took off slightly in a curve, couldn't catch the momentum and crashed straight into the safety fence at high speed.
Shiffrin then reported from the hospital bed with “only an inner ligament injury.”

Valerie Grenier also had a hard time on that fateful weekend in Cortina d'Ampezzo.
The Canadian was setting an absolute top time on the difficult slope when a bump knocked her out.
Grenier later reported from the hospital with scratches on his face, a bandage around his right arm and his left arm in a splint.
