Thomas Tuchel's chapter at FC Bayern will close in the summer.

But what milestones were there on the way to his end?

Munich – He came as the great hope of shaping an era at FC Bayern.

But contrary to expectations, Thomas Tuchel's term of office will end next summer after less than a year and a half.

Tuchel's time with the German record champions was marked by misunderstandings and inexplicable defeats.

A review.

Surprising Nagelsmann dismissal – Tuchel takes over

It was surprising news that shocked the football world on March 23, 2023.

Julian Nagelsmann should be released as coach of FC Bayern after he narrowly lost to Bayer Leverkusen.

This was surprising because he and his team still had a chance of winning all three titles and not even two years earlier had come to FC Bayern from RB Leipzig for 20 million euros as a “long-term project”.

The reason for his dismissal was the availability of Thomas Tuchel, as it turned out the day after.

Nagelsmann's successor signed a contract until 2025 and immediately made his high ambitions clear.

“It's about winning, it's a commitment, there can be no misunderstandings.

We are here for three titles – nothing else,” said Tuchel when he was introduced.

The day after Tuchel's presentation, Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka criticized Nagelsmann's dismissal.

“Little love, little heart,” said Kimmich.

Tuchel: Debut against BVB was successful – chances for the title were lost within two weeks

Tuchel's debut took place in the top game against his former club Borussia Dortmund on April 1st.

With a confident performance, they outclassed BVB 4-2 and secured the lead in the table.

Just a few days later there was the first, momentous defeat for the record champions.

On April 4th, the Munich team lost 1-2 against SC Freiburg in the cup quarter-finals in their own arena.

The first title was gone.

Just two weeks after losing the cup against SC Freiburg, FC Bayern also had to give up the Champions League.

After a 3-0 draw in the first leg against eventual winners Manchester City, Tuchel's team couldn't get past a 1-1 draw in the home game and also had to say goodbye to their second title.

Even after being eliminated in the quarter-finals of the premier class, Tuchel declared that he was “shockingly in love” with his team.

Happy ending championship and a chaotic transfer summer

On matchday 33, after a 3-1 home defeat against RB Leipzig, it looked as if FC Bayern had also lost their third title under Tuchel.

But on May 27th, BVB couldn't get past a 2-2 draw in the home game against Mainz 05 on the last match day and had to watch as the record champions were able to secure the German championship thanks to a goal from Jamal Musiala in the final phase in Cologne.

Tuchel lifted the championship trophy for the first time in his career.

Anyone who thought that things would calm down at FC Bayern after the spectacular season finale was wrong.

During the transfer phase, Tuchel pointed out several times that the squad was too thin and that players like Goretzka and Kimmich were more of an eighth player than a sixth player.

In doing so, he not only angered those in charge at the club, but also its players.

Tuchel never got his desired “holding six” and he also came away empty-handed with dream players like Kyle Walker and Declan Rice.

The highlight was Joao Palhinha's failed deal on Deadline Day.

Good start to the season – what’s happening in Saarbrücken?

The dress rehearsal before the start of the Bundesliga season went badly wrong.

Tuchel's team lost 3-0 in the Supercup against RB Leipzig.

Nevertheless, the start of the season was successful and they secured themselves at the top of the table together with Bayer Leverkusen.

When everything looked like a good season, Bayern surprisingly lost in the second round of the DFB Cup to third division team Saarbrücken on November 1st.

The criticism then rained down on Tuchel.

In particular, TV experts Didi Hamann and Lothar Matthäus repeatedly criticized the trainer.

The argument escalated in front of running TV cameras after FC Bayern won comfortably 4-0 against Borussia Dortmund.

Nevertheless, the coach could be sure of the support of those responsible.

Confident march through the Champions League – first defeat in Frankfurt

FC Bayern marched through the first half of the season almost confidently.

In the Champions League group, group victory was already certain after four match days and they were also unbeaten in the Bundesliga until mid-December.

On matchday 14 there was a heavy blow against Eintracht Frankfurt.

After the 1:5, Tuchel admitted that he had overwhelmed his team with a short-term tactical approach.

Right at the start of the second half of the season there was the second defeat in the Bundesliga.

They lost against Werder Bremen 1-0 in their own stadium for the first time since 2008.

“This goes against every law of competitive sport,” complained Tuchel after the game.

There was no longer any sign of the once “shock-loving” coach.

After the defeat, there was a fan club meeting on January 28th, where the 50-year-old explained that he would be interested in playing abroad, especially in Spain.

An unfortunate statement given that Barca coach Xavi had recently announced his resignation at the end of the season.

The tip of the iceberg: three defeats within a week

In the top game on February 10th, FC Bayern had the chance to jump past Bayer Leverkusen into first place in the table for the first time.

But it turned out quite differently.

The Werkself outclassed the record champions and sent them home with a 3-0 defeat.

Xabi Alonso managed to out-coach Tuchel in the game.

Board boss Jan-Christian Dreesen moderated the emerging coaching debate.

The following Wednesday there should be redemption at Lazio in the round of 16 of the Champions League.

After a good first half, FC Bayern lost the first leg 0-1 in the Eternal City.

Tuchel is annoyed by questions about his future.

Once again, his stars, whom he increasingly antagonizes with public attacks, are puzzling him.

Just four days later, Munich lost a lead at VfL Bochum and ended up losing 2-3.

“I don’t believe in these monstrous statements of support for coaches,” explained Dreesen.

Meanwhile, Tuchel made light of the defeat.

Three days later, on February 21st, FC Bayern announced that the Tuchel chapter would end in the summer and a realignment would take place.
