Julian Nagelsmann talks about his release from FC Bayern - and about the fact that Kahn and Salihamidžić didn't keep their word.

Munich - The coaches at FC Bayern don't last long these days.

Julian Nagelsmann suffered a defeat in Leverkusen and a skiing holiday in March 2023 after about a season and a half, and his successor Thomas Tuchel now also has to leave again, albeit only at the end of the season.

Nagelsmann reveals what went wrong with Kahn and Salihamidžić back then

Nagelsmann is now a national coach and seems to have enough distance from the club and the circumstances back then that he speaks quite openly about the separation.

In particular about the falling out with Hasan Salihamidžić and Oliver Kahn at the time.

Nagelsmann, who was to shape an era at FC Bayern and was given a five-year contract, describes his relationship with the two former bosses at the time as “good”.

But in an interview with

Spiegel

he also speaks of a discrepancy between what was said and what happened.

Nagelsmann discussed the worst-case scenario with Bayern bosses

“We discussed how we wanted to deal with it together if a worst-case scenario occurred,” says Nagelsmann.

This happened in Leverkusen.

Bayern already had a nine-point lead over Borussia Dortmund, but the club squandered it.

But in the hour of need, according to Nagelsmann, Salihamidžić and Kahn no longer adhered to their mutual agreements.

“But then everything was different.

The question arises: How open will I be to protagonists in this industry in the future?”

Nagelsmann: Good relationships with decision-makers “don’t help either”

Ultimately, Tuchel managed to secure the championship title with the help of Dortmund.

But the new coach's aegis will soon come to an end.

According to Nagelsmann, things aren’t always “super nice” in football.

A good relationship with decision-makers “doesn’t help either”.

That’s why he is now “more careful” and “more sensitive”.

Nevertheless, he makes it clear that he “in no way” regrets his involvement on the Isar.

Nagelsmann would have liked more time at FC Bayern

Looking back, he would have liked more time from Bayern.

Clubs like Liverpool or Manchester City would have had more patience with coaches like Jürgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola.

Although he was also obliged to change things, he wasn't given the time to do it.

“The coaches at Bayern Munich don't get that much time to develop something,” Nagelsmann pointed out, pointing out that it took Klopp five years at Liverpool and seven years for Guardiola at City to win their first championship.

Nagelsmann about the ski holiday: “It was approved that way”

Nagelsmann also spoke again about the fateful skiing holiday in the Zillertal: “I was accused at the time of not being available after a defeat against Bayer Leverkusen.

That just wasn’t true.”

And further: “From Monday to Wednesday I was in the office at the training ground on Säbener Straße as normal,” said Nagelsmann.

He was also the only one there, “other than that, none of the people responsible were there.

I then went on a short vacation from Wednesday afternoon to Friday morning.

That was also approved.”

Lessons for Nagelsmann: “Don’t attract too much attention”

His conclusion after his time at Bayern was to “not stand out too much”, but on the other hand he also didn’t want to completely disguise himself for a job.

Nagelsmann: “I just do some things differently, simply because I’m younger.

I don't stand on the line at FC Bayern games in a beige trench coat just because some of my predecessors did that." There is certainly a hint of bitterness in the current national coach's words.

Those in charge knew in advance that he would one day wear a red jacket and it didn't bother them: "But in the event of failure, such trivialities are often smeared on one's face."

Nagelsmann lacks openness in the football business

In general, he denounced that the football business lacks “openness”.

If there is no more talking after a defeat, “you know that something is wrong.”

What is communicated to the outside world after a separation has little to do with reality.

Nagelsmann and the national team are aiming for a turnaround at the European Championship in their own country.

Toni Kroos should also help with this.

Real Madrid's title hamster has announced his comeback after a conversation with Nagelsmann.
