The RefCam is intended to provide special insights into Eintracht's game against Wolfsburg.
There has already been a test run, but fans have to be patient.
Frankfurt – They already happen often in other sports.
Small cameras are installed on selected players or referees to capture a different view of the game.
Now, for the first time, such a device is being used in the Bundesliga – in the game between Eintracht Frankfurt and VfL Wolfsburg.
With the RefCam, the DFB and DFL want to increase transparency and at the same time provide illustrative material for referees.
Referee Schlager at the Eintracht game with RefCam
As the German Football Association announced in a press release, the RefCam will be attached to the referee's headset in the game between Eintracht Frankfurt and VfL Wolfsburg.
The game will be filmed from the perspective of referee Daniel Schlager.
The use of RefCam is primarily about “documentation purposes and additional transparency for the public as well as further training and improvement opportunities for referees.”
This is intended to create more understanding of the duties of referees, according to the DFB.
Daniel Schlager has already refereed a game with the RefCam in the third league.

The RefCam images were not broadcast until mid-March - parallels to the ARD documentary
However, the referee camera footage will not be visible in the live broadcast or in the recap of the game.
The plan is to publish the video material as part of the short report “Referees Mic'd up – Bundesliga”.
This will be made available to the DFL's media partners from March 12th.
A look at the past reveals that the DFL is not taking a completely new path.
For the purpose of the five-part ARD documentary “Impartial”, referee Deniz Aytekin, among others, was cabled during the opening game of the 2022/23 season and his conversations on the pitch were recorded.
In addition to comprehensive insights into the work of a Bundesliga referee, the spectators were also able to witness one or two strange exchanges during the Frankfurter Eintracht game against FC Bayern.

Test run with RefCam in a third division game between 1860 and Bielefeld
The successful test run for the RefCam took place in December 2023. Referee Daniel Schlager already wore the RefCam at TSV 1860 Munich's third division game at Arminia Bielefeld.
Back then, fans didn't have to wait so long for the video footage.
MagentaSport published the edited footage just one day after the game.
Schlager was convinced of the concept at the time.
“In principle, it’s about more transparency and creating a different perspective.
There are 30 cameras and 30 angles in the stadium and we only have one and have to make decisions live based on that,” he said, explaining his support for the project.
