Draw!

SV Werder Bremen played 1:1 (1:1) against SV Darmstadt 98 in the Bundesliga game on matchday 23.

The DeichStube match report.

Bremen –

SV Werder Bremen

simply cannot overcome their promotion complex and did not get beyond a 1:1 (1:1) draw against SV

Darmstadt 98

, the bottom of the Bundesliga table, on Saturday afternoon.

The early lead thanks to an own goal by Christoph Zimmermann (8th) was not enough for Bremen to win at home because the guests equalized through Julian Justvan (33rd).

In the end, Bremen were even lucky that they didn't lose the game after a huge late mistake by Michael Zetterer.

In the table, coach Ole Werner's team will remain in seventh place, at least for one night, but in the worst case scenario they could slip by two places.

SV Werder Bremen

's starting lineup changed in two positions

compared to last weekend's 1-0 win at 1. FC Köln.

As expected, veteran Christian Groß replaced captain Marco Friedl, who had an ankle injury, in the back three.

Up front, Justin Njinmah, who recently came off the bench as a joker in Cologne and scored the winning goal, was allowed to start again from the start.

Nick Woltemade had to make room for him.

Against the “Lilien” the newly formed three-man chain around Julian Malatini, Groß and Anthony Jung automatically came into focus due to the four failures in defense (Amos Pieper, Milos Veljkovic, Niklas Stark and Marco Friedl).

“We trained a few things in chain behavior this week because a few guys are missing at the moment.

But the boys who are on the pitch today have also played good games for us,” said Werder coach Ole Werner on the Sky microphone before the game.

“It will probably still take them a little while to find each other, but the boys are all capable of playing good football for us.”

Werder Bremen against SV Darmstadt 98: Christoph Zimmermann's own goal puts SVW in the lead

In fact,

Werder Bremen

didn't need any warm-up time at all and started off swinging against the guests, who had not won in 15 games: Justin Njinmah used a well-timed long ball on the left wing to first leave opponent

Christoph Zimmermann

standing and then skilfully wiggle it out.

In the center forward position, Romano Schmid missed from a few meters to put the strong cross into the goal (2nd).

A little later it got really loud for the first time in the Wohninvest Weserstadion: After a one-two from Schmid and Marvin Ducksch on the right wing, the Austrian wanted to serve the starting Njinmah.

Defender Zimmermann tried to save, but unfortunately managed to maneuver the ball past keeper Marcel Schuhen into his own goal (8th).

The lead subsequently gave Bremen further impetus - and was almost extended ten minutes later.

After a one-two with Weiser, with a bit of luck - because Matej Maglica was still deflecting - Ducksch appeared half-right in front of Schuhe, put the ball past the

SV Darmstadt 98

goalkeeper and actually should have just pushed it into the empty goal.

But instead of finishing, the striker went down and referee Florian Badstüber awarded

a penalty

.

After the video assistant Patrick Hanslbauer pointed out and viewed the video images, the referee revised his decision a little later.

The pictures clearly showed: Ducksch had allowed himself to be carried away with a completely unnecessary

swoop

and was rightly given a yellow card for it (20').

Werder Bremen against SV Darmstadt 98: Julian Justvan equalizes for the “Lilien”.

Werder Bremen

continued to dominate the game afterwards, without acting brilliantly.

In the 25th minute the bell rang again in the Darmstadt goal, but Schmid was offside when he scored after a pass from Jens Stage that was a little too late.

And

SV Darmstadt 98

?

Up to that point there had been hardly any offensive action except for a few corners, but after a first tentative attempt by Sebastian Polter (32') they suddenly

equalized

.

After an inaccurate pass from Jung to Felix Agu, the latter lost the ball with serious consequences against Matthias Bader in his own half.

The Darmstadt player crossed directly to

Julian Justvan

, whose low shot from the half-left position was decisively deflected by Malatini and Christian Groß - 1-1 (33').

As a result, Werder completely lost track, became increasingly less precise, lost the majority of the duels and, on top of that, received two more yellow cards.

First Senne Lynen committed a tactical foul (35th), then Jung reached against Bader (38th).

After that, the action continued until the half-time whistle, so the equalizer wasn't undeserved.

“We had the game very well under control at first and played very confidently until we conceded a goal.

After that we were a bit unsettled, not just in the back three, but as a whole team,” analyzed Milos Veljkovic, who was currently missing due to injury, during the break on Sky.

There was no substitution in the second half, in which the Hessians promptly had their first good opportunity, but Marvin Mehlem missed after a pass from Tim Skarke (46').

On the other side, Weiser then showed a fine solo, as a result of which Ducksch shot from 25 meters, but aimed far too centrally (50th).

Then things got rougher for the guests: First, Fabian Holland let Schmid come on and was shown a yellow card (52') as was Klaus Gjasula for a nasty kick against Lynen (56').

After an hour, Njinmah had a great chance to take the lead again, but failed after a stage pass due to the strong reaction of Schuhe (59th).

But

Werder Bremen

now stuck with it: just a minute later, Schmid Ducksch played free, but he also couldn't find a way past Shoes.

Werder Bremen against SV Darmstadt 98: Late huge mistake by Michael Zetterer has no consequences thanks to VAR

Ole Werner responded with a double substitution: the Werder coach brought on Olivier Deman and Nick Woltemade (63') for the disappointing Agu and the hapless Njinmah.

Then Darmstadt's Maglica saw the yellow card after a duel with Weiser (67th) and was lucky not to fly off the pitch after an elbow in an aerial duel against Deman (71st).

Shortly afterwards it was over for Schmid and Lynen, and Leonardo Bittencourt and Dawid Kownacki came into the game for the final quarter of an hour.

But then

Werder Bremen

really had

a bad time

when Michael Zetterer was only able to fend off a shot from Polter and Skarke scored to give

SV Darmstadt 98

the supposed lead .

However, the tip of his foot was offside, so the goal was canceled (78th).

On the other side, Groß and Woltemade rushed past a sharp Ducksch corner (83').

There wasn't much going forward: Ducksch missed a last chance miserably after Bittencourt in the second minute of the five-minute stoppage time.

And it almost came to a head for

Werder Bremen

when Groß

headed a ball back to

Michael Zetterer .

The Werder keeper wanted to solve the situation playfully, but made a big mistake and shot Skarke, who ran with the ball into the empty goal (90th + 7).

Because the Darmstadt attacker got the ball on his leaning arm when he won the ball, referee Badstübner took the goal back again.

So the division of points ended up not being undeserved.

Werder has a very disappointing record as a promoted team this season: from the four games against

Darmstadt

and Heidenheim, Bremen only got a single point.

Final score: 1:1

>>>UPDATE LIVE TICKER<<<

5:33 p.m.: Otherwise, Werder had the better chances overall, but didn't play good football for long stretches and was too complicated.

Werder has to be happy with the draw and now 30 points.

You will soon be able to read a detailed match report, the comments on the game, the scores for the Werder professionals and everything else on DeichStube.de and in the free DeichStube app.

5:29 p.m.: After that it's over!

Werder and Darmstadt drew 1-1.

And that's really lucky for the green and white, because a bad mistake by Michael Zetterer wasn't punished: After a back pass from Groß, Zetterer wants to play the ball forward, but only hits the rushing Skarke, who, however, has his arm in front of his stomach and thus plays the ball.

This would never have been called as a handball in midfield.

However, since the handball occurs directly before the goal is scored, the goal cannot count according to the rules.

90.+8 min: What's going on here?

The goal doesn't count because Skarke had his hand on the ball beforehand.

It remains 1:1.

90.+7 min: Mega mistake from Zetterer and Darmstadt make it 2-1.

90.+5 min:

Darmstadt can no longer make substitutions and therefore plays outnumbered the rest of the time.

Werder comes into the penalty area again promisingly, but stumbles on the ball...

90.+4 min:

The game is interrupted because Mehlem is on the ground and needs to be treated.

Is there anything else going on here after that?

90.+2 min:

Bittencourt plays the ball from the right to the edge of the penalty area, where Ducksch has plenty of space.

Werder's number seven takes the ball directly and plays a return into the arms of Schuhe.

90.+1 min:

After Weiser's cross, Kownacki doesn't really get to the ball in the penalty area. That could have been dangerous.

90.+1 min:

There are five minutes of injury time!

90th min:

Darmstadt changes again and brings in a fresh striker in Seydel for Polter.

88th min:

Julian Malatini intervenes again in his own penalty area.

The Bremen central defender is playing a great game defensively.

On the Darmstadt side, Karic sees a yellow card for a hard tackle on Weiser.

86th min:

Woltemade holds the ball strongly and then has enough passing stations, but his pass goes straight into the opponent's foot.

85th min:

Corner for the guests, but Werder can clear.

But Darmstadt remains in possession of the ball.

82nd min: Werder switches and after Ducksch's header, Kownacki finishes.

However, the shot is deflected towards a corner.

Ducksch puts this dangerously in front of the goal, but at first Groß can't reach it with his head, then Woltemade misses it with his heel at the second post.

There was more in it!

80th min:

Bittencourt tries from a distance, but the shot clearly misses the goal.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against SV Darmstadt 98: The visitors' opening goal does not count

79th min: The goal doesn't count!

Rightly so, but still lucky for Werder because the Green-Whites defended poorly in the situation.

78th min: Goal for Darmstadt, Skarke does it.

But the VAR checks the goal because of a possible offside position.

76th min:

Now there are changes: Lynen and Schmid make room for Bittencourt and Kownacki.

So more offensive at Werder.

Maglica, who is in danger of yellow and red, is leaving the pitch at Darmstadt; Müller is new for him.

75th min:

Werder is getting a little weaker again.

The interim momentum has fizzled out.

Ole Werner is preparing his next double substitution.

Bittencourt and Kownacki are already on the sidelines...

72nd min:

After a free kick for the Lilies, Maglica, who was already under yellow card, elbows Deman in the face.

Strictly speaking, you can certainly give it yellow-red.

But Badstübner leaves it at a warning.

71st min:

Werder are now setting the tone here, but their offensive style is still too complicated.

70th min:

Three-man substitution at Darmstadt: Nürnberger, Kempe and Franjic come on for Justvan, Holland and Gjasula

68th min:

Applause for Malatini, who keeps the ball under pressure and breaks up the situation.

There is currently little offensive coming from Darmstadt.

65th min:

Malatini boils down his opponent in the penalty area.

Once again a calm performance from the young central defender.

64th min:

Bremen's small and at the same time desperately needed upswing is also thanks to Mitchell Weiser, who is now doing much more business on the right side.

Let's see whether Olivier Deman can generate a similar amount of steam on the left side.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against SV Darmstadt 98: double substitution and new momentum at SVW

63rd min:

Ole Werner makes a double substitution before the corner: Woltemade and Deman come on for Njinmah and the weak Agu.

The corner is of no use

62nd min:

Werder is getting better!

Schmid serves Weiser on the right wing.

But the cross is blocked for a corner.

61st min:

Werder again!

Ducksch lobs the ball towards the goal, but Schuhen parries it for a corner.

It's not Ducksch himself who brings this, but rather Anthony Jung, but it's not really dangerous either.

60th min: Mega opportunity for Werder out of nowhere!

Ducksch comes across in midfield and passes to Stage, who deliberately passes it to Njinmah on the edge of the penalty area.

The lightning-fast striker shoots with his inside and forces shoes to react.

Brilliant deed by the Darmstadt goalkeeper!

58th min:

SVW's next advance: Lynen sends Weiser deep on the right side, but the cross from the right rail player falls short.

Ducksch gets to the ball, but can't control it.

56th min:

Yellow for Darmstadt's Gjasula after a hard tackle against Lynen.

The subsequent free kick poses no danger.

55th min:

What are Werder doing there?

The Bremen team combined somewhat awkwardly through the front third, but never found the moment to finish.

In the end, Agu loses the ball relatively miserably on the left side of the baseline.

There was more to it.

52nd min:

Free kick for Werder and yellow for Holland after a foul on Romano Schmid.

Schuhen also picks down the cross after the subsequent free kick.

50th min:

First goal for Werder in the second half.

Weiser first loses the ball on the right wing, but then follows up well and serves Ducksch, who simply shoots from 25 meters.

However, goalkeeper Schuhe picks up the ball effortlessly.

47th min: Great chance for Darmstadt!

Skarke serves Mehlem centrally in front of the goal, who is suddenly free but chases the ball over the goal.

Anthony Jung had previously canceled the offside.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against SV Darmstadt 98: The second half is underway - can the Green-Whites improve?

46th min: It continues in the Weserstadion - without substitution.

Let's go, Werder!

4.30 p.m.:

Maybe a substitution could revive the Bremen game a bit.

Or will Ole Werner give the same eleven players the chance to do better in the second half?

We'll find out shortly...

4:23 p.m.:

It's a strange game in Bremen's Weserstadion.

Werder got off to a great start and had a great chance to take the lead early on through Schmid (2nd minute).

The Austrian missed miserably, but then set up Darmstadt's Zimmermann's own goal (8th) and had his share of the early lead.

As a result, Werder were the better team, but didn't make much of it because Ducksch dropped unnecessarily in the penalty area (18th) and Stage played too late a little later (25th).

The longer the game went on, the less confident coach Ole Werner's team became - and Darmstadt became stronger.

The equalizer was therefore logical (33').

The Green-Whites have to improve significantly again in the second round.

45.+3 min: Half time!

And that is sorely needed.

Werder can collect themselves in the next 15 minutes.

45th + 1 min:

There are three minutes of added time...

45th min:

It 's half time and Werder has to blame themselves for not taking a 2-0 lead after the good start.

As the game progressed, the Green-Whites became increasingly weaker and, above all, more insecure, so that Darmstadt finally got an undeserved equalizer.

43rd min:

Finally Werder again!

Groß wins the ball and plays the ball on the left wing to Njinmah, whose cross finds stage in the center.

The Dane's shot goes well over the goal.

However, the ball was also difficult to take.

42nd min:

Agu does it quickly and plays a long ball, but Ducksch is offside.

40th min:

The Green-Whites clearly lack security here.

Again and again things go backwards in the sluggish build-up of the game.

If Werder plays forward, the ball is gone again in no time.

38th min:

Anthony Jung also sees a yellow card for a foul.

Just like Lynen, it's his fourth of the season.

The list of Werder players with four yellow cards has now grown to seven.

37th min:

Things could look completely different here if Ducksch doesn't drop in the penalty area or if Stage plays the ball earlier.

But now it's 1:1 and the actually weak guests are fully in the game.

36th min:

Senne Lynen sees the yellow card for a foul.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against SV Darmstadt 98: The guests equalize!

33rd min: Oh man, Werder... Agu loses the ball after a sloppy pass from Jung and then things happen quickly: the ball comes from the left into the backcourt to Justvan, who shoots flat.

Groß deflects the ball so that the ball slides under Zetterer and into the goal.

33rd min: Goal for Darmstadt.

30th min:

Werder controls the game, but only has a few chances to score.

The offensive game is simply too flawed.

Let's hope this doesn't come back to haunt us.

28th min:

After a strong dribble from Schmid, the ball comes to Agu on the left, who shoots from 20 meters but only hits a defender.

Corner for Werder, but it doesn't bring anything.

25th min:

Goal for Werder, but offside!

Werder wins the ball in midfield and Stage dribbles on.

However, his pass to Schmid in the penalty area is much too late, so Schmid is now offside.

The Austrian's goal therefore rightly doesn't count.

23rd min:

A 2-0 win would of course have given Werder security early on and broken the Darmstadt team a bit.

Would have had bicycle chain...

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against SV Darmstadt 98: Marvin Ducksch with Schwalbe, no penalty

18th min: Yellow for Marvin Ducksch!

And that is really unnecessary!

Werder combines through the penalty area, loses the ball, but Weiser follows up.

So the ball comes to Ducksch, who goes around the keeper's shoes and just has to push the ball in.

However, Werder's number seven falls and the referee decides on a penalty.

After VAR intervened, Badstübner rightly reversed the decision and decided on Schwalbe.

Right decision!

15th min:

But the green-white can also clear the ball and even initiate the counterattack via Groß.

But Njinmah can't get to the ball on the left wing.

Nevertheless, Werder has to be careful not to allow too many corners here.

Against Heidenheim, that was the big drawback that gave the Green-Whites an early 0-1 deficit.

13th min:

Njinmah has space and dribbles down the left side.

But then the young striker is too playful and misses the ball. In the end it won't be dangerous for SVD keeper Schuhen.

On the other side, Darmstadt has the next corner...

13th min:

This is of course a tailor-made start for the Green-Whites.

The atmosphere in the stadium is also great.

It can carry on like this!

11th minute:

Darmstadt responds directly with the next corner, but that isn't dangerous for Zetterer either.

8th min: After a fine one-two from Schmid and Ducksch, Schmid brings the ball flat into the penalty area, where Njinmah is lurking.

Zimmermann steps in between them and shoots the ball into his own goal.

Lucky for Werder, but also played well.

Njinmah was also already standing behind the Darmstadt central defender, ready to take a shot.

1:0 for Werder!

8th min: Gooooooooool for Werder.

Darmstadt helps out... own goal!

7th minute:

Werder runs up to the Lilies and forces them to play the long ball, which the guests don't play cleanly.

The Green-Whites are in possession of the ball again and determine the game in the opening minutes.

6th min:

Maglica heads Skarke's cross well over the goal.

Werder is in possession of the ball again.

6th min:

And the next corner for Darmstadt...

5th min:

Now the guests' first advance.

After a cross from the left, Felix Agu clears it for a corner at the second post.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against SV Darmstadt 98: Mega chance right after kick-off

1. Min: Anpfiff. Der Ball rollt! Auf geht‘s, Werder!

15.26 Uhr: Die Mannschaften laufen ein, Christian Groß führt die Grün-Weißen als Kapitän aufs Feld. Gleich geht‘s los im Weserstadion: Werder Bremen gegen Darmstadt 98!

15.25 Uhr: In fünf Minuten geht‘s los!

Dezember gegen Leipzig (1:1). Danach kam er lediglich zu drei Kurzeinsätzen.

14:35 Uhr: Beim SV Werder fehlt übrigens erneut Naby Keita.

Davon will Trainer Ole Werner jedoch nichts wissen.

“I don’t think that’s something we concern ourselves with,” says the 35-year-old – and explains: “We prefer to look at what an opponent brings to the pitch, prepare for it as best we can and, above all, watch on our performance.” In the end, the opponent’s name and standings are “completely irrelevant”.

In addition, Werner recently did not see the Darmstadt team as being as weak in form as their results might suggest.

“We know that Darmstadt is a team that also looks for a playful way,” says the coach, pointing to the team’s reasonable performances against Stuttgart (1:2), Gladbach (0:0) and in Frankfurt (2:2). .

In some games, the “Lilien” lacked a bit of directness - a point that

Ole Werner

sees as improved by the loan of striker Sebastian Polter (came from Schalke 04 in the winter).

Werder's defense, which has been severely weakened, will have to work against Darmstadt 98.
