Leo Messi's career, like it or not, is on the wane.
The legendary star did indeed win the World Cup, but he left Europe and now plays for Inter Miami in the MLS league, a league that is quite far from the spotlight and of course also far from Europe's top leagues.
But as far as the man's popularity is concerned, it's really not a decline, but quite the opposite.
Messi recorded an impressive milestone when he gained no less than 500 million followers on Instagram.
Messi is still far from his peak and Chiba, Cristiano Ronaldo who is in the top spot with no less than 622 million followers, but he has established himself in second place as the two legendary footballers also dominate the popular social network.
His popularity is only soaring.

How much do these two control?
Well, in third place is the singer Selena Gomez with "only" 429 million followers.
Kylie Jenner ranks fourth with 400 million followers and American movie star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson rounds out the top 5 with 397 million followers.
According to the website Sportico, Messi is now followed by no less than 20 percent of the 2.5 billion active users on Instagram and has more followers than all NFL players combined.
By the way, Ronaldo has more followers than Messi, but the Argentine still holds the record for the most popular post ever, when his photo with the World Cup from Qatar garnered more than 56 million likes.
