Six Nations tournament: excluded against Italy, Jonathan Danty suspended for five weeks

Highlights: Jonathan Danty banned for five weeks for dangerous tackle on Italy. Danty will miss games against Wales, Oyonnax and the Champions Cup. He will not be eligible to play again until April 2. The suspension means the French XV will be without two key players for the rest of the tournament. They are Romain Namack and Mathieu Jalibert, who will miss the games against Scotland and England. The French XV also lost to Italy in the Six Nations opener on Sunday.

The center of the XV of France Jonathan Danty, excluded on Sunday against Italy, was suspended for five weeks, the disciplinary committee announced on Tuesday.

His Six Nations tournament with Jonathan Danty is over. The La Rochelle player (31 years old, 28 caps), first sanctioned with a yellow card for a dangerous tackle, head to head, on the Italian Juan Ignacio Brex (40th+3), before he was transformed into a red card by the bunker, was suspended five weeks for this gesture.

“The Disciplinary Commission concluded that the incident warranted an average entry point of six weeks of suspension.

Extenuating circumstances (apologies from the player, admission of guilt and good behavior at the hearing) were applied, reducing the six-week entry point by two weeks.

However, an additional week was added for aggravating factors (the player's disciplinary record), which resulted in a five-week suspension,” the organizing body said in a press release.

As a result, Danty will not be requalified until April 2.

He can reduce this sanction by one week provided he follows the World Rugby monitoring program.

The center will already miss the Blues' next match, on March 10, against Wales, then the following weekend against England in Lyon.

He will still be absent with his club, in the Top 14 ahead of Bayonne (March 23) and Oyonnax (March 30) as well as in the Champions Cup against the Stormers (April 6).

This suspension complicates things for coach Fabien Galthié, already deprived of captain and scrum half Antoine Dupont, busy with rugby sevens and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, openers Romain Ntamack and Matthieu Jalibert or second lines Thibaud Flament ( foot) and Emmanuel Meafou (knee)... In the center position against the XV du Poireau, Danty could be replaced by Bordeaux-Bègles players Yoram Moefana and Nicolas Depoortère or Palois Emilien Gailleton.

After its inaugural rout against Ireland (38-17), the XV of France followed up with a happy victory in Scotland (20-16) then a pitiful draw against Italy (13-13).

The Blues will try to find some color in Cardiff, where they remain on a 13-9 success two years ago.
