Former German pole vaulter Fabian Schulze has died at the age of 39.

The German Athletics Association speaks of a “treacherous disease”.

Sonthofen – Shortly before his 40th birthday, the German former pole vaulter Fabian Schulze died in Sonthofen.

The German Athletics Association announced this on Wednesday.

According to the association's announcement, Schulze succumbed to an undisclosed “treacherous illness”.

He leaves behind his wife and two children.

Schulze belonged to a golden generation of German pole vaulters.

The native of Filderstadt was fourth at the 2006 World Indoor Championships in Moscow, fifth at the 2005 European Indoor Championships in Madrid, sixth at the 2010 European Championships in Barcelona and four times German runner-up.
