Who will be the successor to Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel?
A companion of sports director Christoph Freund is probably on the list.
The exit clause is tough.
Munich – FC Bayern is looking for a successor for Thomas Tuchel, who will leave the club at the end of the season.
Several names of successful trainers are traded around Säbener Straße.
One candidate is apparently an old acquaintance of sports director Christoph Freund.

We're talking about Roger Schmidt, who has been coaching Benfica Lisbon since 2022.
The sports magazine
Kicker
recently brought the Sauerlander into discussion as Tuchel's successor at FC Bayern and refers to the shared past with Christoph Freund.
The two once worked together at RB Salzburg between 2012 and 2014 and value each other.
Schmidt led the Bulls to the Austrian championship and cup double in 2013/14.
Afterwards they parted ways and Schmidt moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.
At the time, Freund worked as a sports coordinator before being promoted to sports director in 2015.
The move to FC Bayern followed in September 2023. Will we see each other again in Munich ten years later?

Roger Schmidt matured internationally
Schmidt, who initially started his coaching career at lower-class clubs in Germany such as Preußen Münster and Paderborn, has now made a big name for himself through his stints abroad and enjoys an excellent reputation in the industry.
After almost three years in Leverkusen, the 56-year-old went to Beijing Guoan in China, where he met Bayern defender Minjae Kim.
After a year's break, Schmidt returned to Europe and celebrated some great offensive football with PSV Eindhoven, while also helping Mario Götze return to his former strength.

With all this international experience, Schmidt could now move to the biggest club in Germany in the Bundesliga.
In addition to the connection to Freund, the Sauerlander's advantage is that he probably won't have any major problems adapting to FC Bayern.
The new coach should be happy to speak German or English, as the new sports director Max Eberl explained during his introduction to Bayern.
However, there is a catch: Schmidt is contractually bound to Benfica until summer 2026.
There is supposed to be an exit clause, but according to media reports it is 30 million euros.
It's hard to imagine that Bayern would spend so much money on a coaching transfer.
However, it is not impossible that the Portuguese will settle for less and accommodate Schmidt on his merits.
Last year the proud club became Portuguese champions.

FC Bayern is looking at Xabi Alonso
It remains questionable, however, whether FCB officials even see Schmidt in the narrower circle of candidates.
Xabi Alonso is currently considered the ideal solution, and a Tuchel successor from the Premier League is also on the list.
