Despite strong performances, former ski jumping world champion Markus Eisenbichler still doesn't get a place in national coach Stefan Horngacher's World Cup squad.

Munich – Markus Eisenbichler celebrated a strong comeback after his self-imposed break from competition.

At the Continental Cup in Iron Mountain, the 32-year-old came third in the first competition and even won the second competition.

He was by far the best German, but there will be no return to the World Cup in the short term.

Ski jumping star Eisenbichler doesn't get a quota place for the World Cup

Thanks to strong performances in the Continental Cup, the DSV gets a quota place, which will not be taken by Eisenbichler, but by his teammate Constantin Schmid at the World Cup in Lahti, Finland.

“I now have really cool opportunities to have fun in the World Cup,” said 24-year-old Schmid, who only landed in the points once in three competitions this winter.

One of the reasons for national coach Stefan Horngacher's decision is the overall placing in the Continental Cup.

Schmid is clearly better placed there than Eisenbichler, who did not achieve good results before his break from competition.

“For the second time this season, Constantin Schmid managed to get the additional World Cup quota place in the Continental Cup.

Accordingly, Constantin is in the squad alongside Andreas Wellinger, Karl Geiger, Pius Paschke, Philipp Raimund and Stephan Leyhe,” was the statement from Horngacher, who is sticking to his line that whoever got him gets the quota place.

Ski jumping star Eisenbichler continues to fail in the Continental Cup

Eisenbichler must therefore continue to offer himself through the Continental Cup.

However, the 32-year-old is seeing a clear improvement that was not foreseeable several weeks ago.

“It's incomprehensible to me that he can't bring anything together.

He often covers up a lot of things.

We need to talk about where we're headed.

Performance counts, that's just how it is.

It doesn’t matter how many medals you have hanging at home,” complained national coach Stefan Horngacher in mid-December.

Eisenbichler made his World Cup debut in 2011, but it wasn't until the 2016/17 season that he made his breakthrough.

In total he won three individual competitions and six competitions in a team competition.

The 32-year-old won six gold medals at world championships and secured bronze in the team competition at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing.
