Dani Alves' troubles with the law are, obviously, not quite over yet.
While the former Brazilian full-back, who notably played for FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, was sentenced on February 22 to 4 and a half years in prison for the rape of a young woman, the prosecution decided this 1st March to appeal the verdict in order to obtain a heavier sentence, AFP learned Friday from a judicial source.
The 40-year-old ex-player was sentenced by a Barcelona court to this prison sentence, as well as to pay 150,000 euros to the young woman, for events which took place in December 2022 in a nightclub in the city.
The prosecution had initially requested nine years in prison.
Alves benefited from the adoption of the law on consent, intended to strengthen the arsenal against sexual violence, but which paradoxically had the perverse effect of leading to reductions in sentences.
Thus, in the case of Alves, the minimum sentence was lowered to four years, compared to six previously.
Faced with controversy, Parliament reformed this law last year, but too late for Alves to be concerned.
The court also considered the payment by the player, from the start of the procedure, of 150,000 euros aimed at compensating the victim as a “mitigating” circumstance, because Alves had, according to the judges, thus shown his desire to “ repair ".
