Suddenly there was no more water: The young German rowers wanted to prepare for the competition year in Spain, but were quickly exposed to strange training conditions.
Mequinenza – As a rule, the dry bank is every rower's goal after the end of a training session or competition and not before the start of a session.
That's what the German U23 rowers thought too, before a dry surprise awaited them at the training camp in Spain.
Young German rowers have been traveling to training camps in Spain for over ten years
According to their own information, the young German rowers have been based in their training camp in the Spanish town of Mequinenza, a village around 200 kilometers southeast of Barcelona, for over ten years.
There, the Ebro River, which is over 900 kilometers long, offers the U23 the perfect conditions to prepare for a long year of competition.

Water in the Ebro is drained - U23 can no longer use training boats
Unless the water is simply drained out in the dammed section of the river where the rowers actually wanted to do their training.
Exactly this strange scenario happened a few days before the end of the training camp.
The water level of the Ebro apparently sank so low in the U23 training area that the boats were completely dry and could no longer be used.
“It was explained to us that the river dam was lowered to make room for the water, which was supposed to be drained in large quantities from the mountains,” says U23 national coach Marcus Schwarzrock, describing the strange situation on the German Rowing Association’s homepage.

The units for the last four days of the training camp then had to be rescheduled.
Instead of exercises on the water, the program from now on included working on the ergometers that we had brought with us to Spain.
