Many football fans in Germany are already looking forward to the home European Championships in the summer.

Public viewing should return to the Republic.

Munich - In less than 100 days, the German national soccer team will open the 2024 European Championship with the game against Scotland in Munich's Allianz Arena.

The fans are already looking forward to the tournament in the summer, where public viewing will be possible again thanks to a special regulation.

Is public viewing returning?

During the World Cup in Germany in 2006, the phenomenon of public viewing became established in the Federal Republic.

At major tournaments such as the European and World Cups, thousands upon thousands of fans watched the German national team's games in public places in the nation's major cities.

However, in recent years this has come to a standstill.

This was not possible during the last two tournaments.

Due to the corona pandemic, it was not allowed to watch the European Championships in 2021 in such large groups.

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar took place in winter, which made public viewing difficult.

There are also hurdles for the upcoming European Championships, but thanks to a special regulation, fans can look forward to the joint event again.

EM 2024: Telekom and Sky reach an agreement

On Tuesday, Telekom and Sky announced that they would cooperate on the 2024 European Championships.

Previously, MagentaTV had the rights to the tournament's 51 games, including five exclusive matches.

A large proportion of the games can be seen on free TV via ARD, ZDF and RTL, but not all of them.

Thanks to the cooperation between Telekom and Sky, there is a special regulation for pubs and restaurants.

Streaming provider MagentaTV will broadcast its EM broadcast for the catering industry and official events via the pay-TV channel Sky and thus make it available.

Public viewing is also possible again.

Telekom boss about home European Championships: “Raise enthusiasm to a new level”

In order to hold a public viewing during the European Championship, the organizers must apply to UEFA.

If you win the contract, Sky will provide the hardware for the event.

Organizers can then show both the non-free-to-air parallel games and the MagentaTV conference.

Telekom's TV boss is also happy about the deal.

“We want to take the enthusiasm for the home Euros to a new level.

Live broadcasts in the catering industry and classic public viewing are indispensable because these mass phenomena captivate millions of people,” he explained.
