Shiffrin's father succumbs to serious head injuries after tragic accident
The American fell from the roof while doing craft work on the family home and died from serious head injuries on February 2, 2020.
A stroke of fate for the Shiffrin family and especially their daughter Mikaela.
The now 28-year-old ended the season early and subsequently struggled with mental problems.
Ahead of the 2023 World Cup, Shiffrin said in a
Eurosport
interview: “Every day feels like you’re drowning.
For the rest of my life I will no longer be able to understand that I can no longer talk to my father." The American has now accepted the blow of fate - even if it will probably always be part of her.

Shiffrin remembers his late father with a video
To mark her dad's anniversary, Shiffrin uploaded a video to Instagram and emotionally recalled: "This may not be the most 'tasteful' video to share on his birthday... but I can hear his voice and I can see his smile."
In the video, Jeff Shiffrin can be seen carrying the family cat Muffin wrapped in a towel because she apparently didn't make it to the litter box in time.
For Mikaela, it's not the content of the video that makes it special.

“When I look at pictures and videos like this, my heart calms down when it panics that my mind no longer has space to hold these memories of him.
We lost him, but we didn't lose the time we had with him.
It was real and cannot be erased.
“Sometimes I have to remind myself of that,” the ski star continues.
