Defeat!

SV Werder Bremen lost 1:2 (0:2) in the Bundesliga game on matchday 25 against Borussia Dortmund.

The DeichStube match report.

Bremen – That wasn’t enough!

SV

Werder Bremen failed to score anything in the home game against

Borussia Dortmund

on Saturday evening

despite being in the lead for 45 minutes.

In the end, coach Ole Werner's team narrowly lost 1:2 (0:2) because they could no longer make up a 0:2 deficit.

With another 30 points, Werder is in ninth place after 25 match days, but can still be overtaken by SC Freiburg on Sunday.

The goals for

BVB

in the Wohninvest Weserstadion, which was sold out with 42,100 spectators, were scored by Donyell Malen (21st) and Jadon Sancho (38th).

For Werder, Justin Njinmah was only able to shorten the score in the second half (70').

Before the break, Dortmund's Marcel Sabitzer was sent off with a red card after a serious foul (45').

Coach Ole Werner had made two changes to

SV Werder Bremen

's starting lineup compared to the 2-1 defeat at TSG Hoffenheim last weekend.

In defense, returnee Niklas Stark replaced Christian Groß in the back three after recovering from hip problems.

Up front, Justin Njinmah, who recently came off the bench as a joker in Sinsheim and brought some liveliness, was allowed to start again from the start.

Nick Woltemade had to make room for him.

Captain Stark, Julian Malatini and Anthony Jung completed the three-man chain in front of keeper Michael Zetterer.

Mitchell Weiser (right) and Felix Agu (left) were again on the wings.

Senne Lynen and Jens Stage formed the double six, the three-man attack consisted of Justin Njinmah, Romano Schmid and Marvin Ducksch, who was under particular scrutiny after the fan and media criticism after the Hoffenheim game.

Werder Bremen against Borussia Dortmund: Return and farewell to Niclas Füllkrug in the Weserstadion

“You can’t prevent the quality of the opponent, it’s on the pitch.

We want to make it uncomfortable for the opponent and you can do that today with two things,”

Werder Bremen

coach Ole Werner explained the match plan against

BVB

on the Sky microphone before the game : “First of all, everyone has to help each other in defense.

It's important that you maintain good spacing so that you can fight duels consistently and energetically.

And, and this is even more important, that you always radiate danger when you have the ball, at all times.

Against Dortmund, it's important that you find depth and finishes."

In the Wohninvest Weserstadion, which was completely sold out with 42,500 spectators, the Bremen team initially succeeded in this project quite well with the return of striker Niclas Füllkrug and BVB assistant coach Nuri Sahin.

The first big chance of the game belonged to

Werder Bremen

: Ducksch ran into a fine chip ball from Weiser from a suspected offside position and finished freely in the penalty area, but his chip failed completely and was easy prey for

BVB

keeper Gregor Kobel (8th).

A cross pass to Njinmah, who was also running along, would probably have been a much more successful option.

A little later, Schmid won the ball from Jadon Sancho and fed Ducksch again, but the pass was played far too sloppily, so the good chance was wasted and Niklas Süle was able to make a decisive clearance (14th).

On the subsequent Ducksch corner, Weiser had a free shot, but Kobel again had no trouble defusing the harmless shot.

Werder Bremen against Borussia Dortmund: Donyell Malen puts BVB in the lead with a dream goal from the side kick

And the Champions League round of 16,

Borussia Dortmund

?

Appeared offensively dangerous for the first time in the 21st minute - and how!

Zetterer unfortunately only had a strong long-range shot from Bremen-born Julian Brandt deflected at the feet of

Donyell Malen

.

He picked up the ball once in the six-meter area and then scored a remarkable

side kick

through the legs of the Bremen keeper to give the visitors the lead - 0-1 (21st).

Werder Bremen

then seemed to be slightly defeated, even though Njinmah suddenly shot in the penalty area after a quick throw-in - but his attempt only hit the side netting (28').

The ice-cold guests did better: After a bad pass from Schmid, the ball went towards Bremen's goal at lightning speed, the ball landed via Füllkrug and Brandt to

Jadon Sancho

, who duped Malatini far too easily with a short feint and coolly shot it into the near corner - 0: 2 (38th).

In the 44th minute, Ducksch once again created a hint of a goal threat with a free kick that was flicked over the wall - but once again the strong Kobel was at his post.

Immediately before the half-time whistle ,

Marcel Sabitzer

wanted to stop one last Bremen counterattack, but he stepped on Weiser's Achilles heel with his outstretched leg so badly that referee Deniz Aytekin immediately pulled out a

red card

for the Austrian (45th).

A tough but justifiable decision.

Werder Bremen against BVB: Ex-Dortmunder Justin Njinmah scores, but SVW loses

Visiting coach Edin Terzic reacted at half-time and took down the goalscorer Malen and brought in another defender in Mats Hummels to defend the lead in a deep 5-3-1.

Ole Werner, on the other hand, sent the same eleven into the race.

And from then on she tried to take command.

After two inaccurate long-range shots from Schmid (46') and Njinmah (52'),

Werder Bremen

had the first big chance of the second half.

A sharp cross from Weiser deftly slipped through Schmid's legs, allowing Ducksch to finish freely.

But the shot whizzed just past the near corner (54').

That should have been the connection.

Werder remained in control against the guests who were now isolated, but too often acted without the necessary precision in the final third.

Ole Werner reacted after just over an hour with a double substitution: he brought on Milos Veljkovic, who was celebrating his comeback after a knee injury, in place of the unfortunate Malatini.

Dawid Kownacki came on for the pale Stage (65th).

Then Marvin Ducksch, who had been hapless until then, suddenly had a flash of inspiration.

BVB

defender Hummels completely misjudged his deep ball

, so Schmid was on his own and fed

Justin Njinmah

, who was running with him, who only had to push it into the bottom right corner from close range – 1:2 (70th).

A little later, Schmid picked up his fifth yellow card for a foul on substitute Felix Nmecha on the halfway line (77th).

And then Mitchell Weiser suddenly had a great chance to equalize: After a free-kick cross from Ducksch, the ball landed in the backcourt to the rail player, but Schlotterbeck blocked his shot from a central position in the utmost necessity for a corner (79th).

But instead of keeping their foot on the gas,

Werder Bremen

subsequently failed to stay on the trigger and create further chances.

The result: the flow of the game became less and less.

The personnel changes - Leo Bittencourt for Felix Agu (79th) and Skelly Alvero and Nick Woltemade for Stark and Schmid, who limped off the pitch (84th) - did little to change this.

It only became dangerous again after a final counterattack - but for

BVB

: But Rany Bensebaini missed the possible decision (90th + 5).

That's how it ultimately ended with the narrow 1-2 defeat against

Borussia Dortmund

, after which one can be accused of having created too little pressure in the first half and too little esprit in the second half.

Next Saturday (3:30 p.m.) Bremen will continue away at 1. FC Union Berlin.

>>> UPDATE WERDER LIVE TICKER <<<

8:28 p.m.: With that, your ticker man says goodbye for today.

As usual, our colleagues will provide you with everything about the game in our online and print products.

We'll see you again next Saturday when Werder fights again for three points at Union Berlin at 3:30 p.m.

See you then!

8:27 p.m.: It's not enough for Werder against BVB!

The burden of conceding two goals in the first half by Malen (21st) and Sancho (38th) is too high.

And that despite the fact that Bremen were in the majority for the entire second half, as Sabitzer was sent off with a straight red card shortly before the end of the first half.

In the second half, BVB defended themselves with all their might in their own half, but Werder couldn't find anyone to pose a serious threat to the guests.

Njinmah's goal (70th) wasn't enough either.

And so Dortmund scores three points on the Weser.

8:25 p.m.: ... that was the last action of the game!

Aytekin blows the whistle and the Werder players sink to the ground.

Dortmund narrowly wins 2-1!

90.+6: Bensebaini has another chance after a counterattack, but his shot from eleven meters to the left of the penalty area goes into the side netting.

But...

90.+5:

The following free kick ends up in the arms of Kobel.

90.+5:

Yellow again for Adeyemi after a foul on Alvero.

90.+5:

The last minute displayed is running.

Dortmund is improving here second by second.

90.+4:

Kownacki comes across a high ball in the penalty area and wants to put it behind the chain, but there is no teammate there, the ball goes out of the goal.

90.+3:

Ducksch of course tries it straight away, but his attempt doesn't get past the wall.

90.+2:

There's a free kick from a good position half-left in front of the penalty area!

90.+1:

Werder still has five minutes!

89. Min:

We know this: It's harmless.

Then Zetterer is lucky when he gets the ball behind and shoots at an opponent.

88th min:

Bittencourt gets another corner with a direct shot.

86th min:

Jung has the ball deep in Dortmund's half and tries a long diagonal ball.

Emphasis on “tried”.

The ball sails out of bounds.

84th min:

Both teams change again.

Alvero and Woltemade come for Stark and Schmid.

At BVB, Maatsen is leaving, Bensebaini is coming.

Werder Bremen against Borussia Dortmund in the live ticker: One goal is still missing, Werder wants the equalizer

83rd min:

The following corner turns into a counterattack for Werder, but Njinmah cannot convert it and he loses the ball.

82nd min: Relief for Dortmund again, with a corner popping out to the left.

It lands on Hummels' head, so Zetterer has to show all his skills!

79th min:

The subsequent corner kick, as you know, doesn't achieve anything.

79th min: And the next chance!

A free kick lands at Stark, who doesn't hit the ball.

This jumps to Weiser, whose shot is blocked and flies over the goal!

78th min:

Schlotterbeck now also sees yellow for a foul in midfield.

Kownacki is the one who suffers.

In the same minute Ole Werner changes and brings Bittencourt for Agu.

78th min:

Relief for Dortmund again: Özcan tries low from the second row, Zetterer is down and holds safely.

77th min:

Schmid sees his fifth yellow card.

In midfield he kills Nmecha.

This means he will miss the game against Union next week.

74th min:

Nmecha comes to BVB, Sancho leaves the pitch.

74th min:

Schmid gets the ball in the penalty area and wants to pass it on to Ducksch, but gets stuck.

72nd min: BVB is now switching back to the offensive!

The first wave gets stuck, but Dortmund follows up.

Suddenly, after a very simple pass, substitute Adeyemi is completely free from Zetterer, but the Werder goalkeeper saves his team from falling two goals behind again in a one-on-one situation!

Werder Bremen against Borussia Dortmund in the live ticker: Werder presses and scores, new hope thanks to Justin Njinmah

70th min: Ducksch plays a steep pass to Schmid.

Hummels tackles but doesn't hit the ball.

As a result, Schmid is completely blank and passes it across the middle to Njinmah, who says thank you from eleven meters and easily pushes the ball in down the right.

Everything open again!

70th min: GOOD for Werder!

Njinmah shortens it to 2:1!

68th min:

Ducksch intercepts a bad pass in front of the opposing penalty area, first suggests a shot, but then plays a pass.

Nobody except him expected that, the ball rolled to Kobel and Ducksch complained to his teammates.

67th min:

As with the other attempts, no danger.

67th min:

Schmid tries an individual action and gets a corner.

65th min:

Ole Werner makes a double change.

Kownacki and Veljkovic arrive, Malatini and Stage are off work.

And Terzic also changes.

Füllkrug doesn't score any more goals today, neither does Brandt.

Adeyemi and Özcan are now in the game.

63rd min:

Dortmund holds the ball just a little longer, plays into the half and to the penalty area, but then goes back again.

Sure, that takes seconds.

62nd min:

Malatini crosses sharply in front of the goal from the right, Süle clears it with his head.

61st min:

Lynen gets the ball back with a great capture in midfield.

59th min:

In return, a counterattack develops for Dortmund, but the Werder players are committed to working back.

It's not about the effort today.

Werder Bremen against Borussia Dortmund in the live ticker: Werder pushes BVB deep into their own half

58th min:

Weiser wobbles his opponent at the front right and then hits the ball at the near corner.

Kobel dives and clears for the corner.

57th min:

On the other side, Schlotterbeck plays a bad pass into the goal after a small solo.

56th min:

Ducksch takes a free kick from the left in front of the goal, but Kobel intercepts the ball.

56th min:

Once again a murmur goes through the stadium because Bremen often makes wrong decisions on offense.

So the next bad pass goes into the goal because Ducksch lets it through but there is no one behind him.

55th min:

BVB with a little relief, Can tries it from the second row, this ball also goes just past the goal to the right.

54th min: The Weserstadion celebrates, but the ball is not in the goal!

Weiser plays across the right to Schmid in the box, but he cleverly lets it through and takes Ducksch with him.

The striker finishes directly, the ball passes very delicately to the right!

53rd min:

BVB is doing well at the back, Werder can't find a gap yet.

That's why Njinmah tries a long-range shot from the box on the left.

It passes just to the right.

49th min:

Werder now attacks much earlier and higher than in the first half.

48th min:

BVB doesn't have to fear this attempt either.

47th min:

A first Werder corner brings nothing, but Bremen follows up and gets the second corner a little later.

46th min:

Werder is now playing on their own fans.

They unpacked an impressive pyro-choreography at the beginning of the game.

That's why smoke first drifts over the field of the Weser Stadium.

46th min:

BVB has changed.

Artistic shooter Malen stayed in the dressing room, Hummels was now in the game for him.

Werder Bremen against Borussia Dortmund in the live ticker: The second half is underway, Werder are in the majority

46th min: Aytekin releases the second half!

7.32 p.m.:

The teams return to the sacred turf of the Weser Stadium.

Let's see what else is going on here for Werder.

7.20 p.m.: If it were 0-0, Werder would be considered a good game.

Werner's team doesn't hide and looks for a way forward, but they lack precision and perhaps also the determination to get the ball to the goal or to their teammate.

BVB is still the stronger team and leads 2-0 thanks to a dream goal from Malen (21st) and a counterattack goal from Sancho (38th).

However, after Sabitzer's red card, the guests will now have to play with ten men.

Maybe there is still something in it for Werder.

7:17 p.m.: ... Aytekin asks for tea during the break!

45.+2:

The following free kick to the box is just centimeters too far for Ducksch, who would otherwise have had a good chance to score.

It's the last action of the first half, because...

45.+1: Red for Sabitzer!

From now on, BVB will only play with ten players!

Weiser has the ball in midfield, turns up – and Sabitzer comes from behind and steps on his ankle.

Unfortunate action, the decision is harsh but justifiable.

Aytekin doesn't hesitate for a second and pulls out red!

Sabitzer doesn't complain at all, but leaves the place without comment.

44th min:

The corner is harmless.

44th min: Ducksch thunders the ball directly towards the near post, but Kobel is there, flies and turns the ball around the post.

Good chance and corner!

43rd min:

Schlotterbeck kicks Ducksch in the back of the knee in the penalty area.

Sounds harder than it is.

There is still a free kick 25 meters half-left in front of the box.

42nd min:

Weiser gets a header at the near post, but it is harmless and goes well past Kobel's goal to the right.

41st min:

After a pass that was actually too steep, Schmid goes out to the right and takes a corner for Werder.

38th min: First it's Jung who dribbles his way to BVB's penalty area and uses Njinmah, but he doesn't get to the ball.

Instead, Dortmund starts a counterattack.

The ball goes out to the left to Sancho, who dribbles from outside against Malatini into the box, the Argentine doesn't look good.

Free in front of Zetterer, the Dortmund player keeps his nerve and makes it 2-0.

38th min: Goal for BVB.

Sancho makes it 2-0.

36th min:

The visor is not well adjusted at Werder.

Weiser has the ball and plenty of space on the right corner of the penalty area, but his cross from the turn to the far post goes out of the goal.

34th min:

No danger, Aytekin whistles for an offensive foul.

34th min:

Agu clears it against Brandt for a corner.

32nd min:

Schmid gets into a good cross position on the right in the BVB penalty area after a ball from Weiser, but cannot find a taker.

The ball stays with Bremen, the second wave rolls over Agu on the left.

But his cross to the far post is easy prey for Kobel.

30th minute:

Füllkrug serves Brandt with a cross pass in the penalty area.

Brandt comes free in front of Zetterer to finish, but the goalkeeper wins this duel.

Then the assistant’s flag goes up – offside!

29th min: After a throw-in, Ducksch passes it to Njinmah, who penetrates the box on the left, beats Süle and then finishes flat at the near corner.

The ball whizzes just past the post to the left, and some spectators have already jumped up to cheer.

26th min:

BVB is now very calm and keeps the ball in their own ranks.

Not much is happening here at the moment.

23rd min:

Until the goal was conceded, Werder had done a good job of preventing BVB from trying to score, and Zetterer hadn't had anything to do yet.

His first act was to get the ball out of his own net.

Bitter!

Werder Bremen against Borussia Dortmund in the live ticker: overhead kick goal puts Werder in trouble

Demnach beginnt im Weserstadion folgende Elf: Kobel – Ryerson, Süle, Schlotterbeck, Maatsen – Sancho, Sabitzer, Brandt, Can, Malen – Füllkrug.

Ziemlich lange her.

For

Werder Bremen,

on the other hand, it will be a matter of avoiding their second defeat in a row after the 2-1 defeat in Hoffenheim in order not to get into a possible negative vortex.

Werner is optimistic.

“It’s a huge challenge for us, but we’ve already shown this season that we can stand up to such opponents and are able to score,” says the 35-year-old.

Greetings from the 1-0 win at Bayern.

In the “absolute highlight game” against

BVB

, Bremen now want to make people sit up and take notice again.

How can this work?

Ole Werner

sums it up like this: “It is important that you are courageous when in possession of the ball and remain determined.

In addition to the defensive work, which has to be at the absolute top level against such an opponent, it is important that you don't make too many mistakes when in possession of the ball and come up with finishing situations." The

Weserstadion

, in which on Saturday evening,

could also become a not insignificant factor

(6.30 p.m. in the DeichStube

live ticker

) the floodlights will come on again.

“Floodlit games in the Weserstadion are always something special because they have a special atmosphere,” emphasizes

Ole Werner

- and is certain: “No opponent likes coming here.” His team will need maximum support from the stands again this time.

So that in the best case scenario it works out with SV Werder Bremen

's first Bundesliga home win

against

BVB

since December 2014. (dco)
