What is it like to live in the same village as Michael Schumacher?

Last year, two residents talked about the past and present with the multiple Formula 1 world champion.

Gland – In a tranquil village on Lake Geneva, a Formula 1 legend has lived out of the public eye for more than ten years.

Michael Schumacher is still an invisible citizen in Gland today.

Even exactly ten years after his terrible skiing accident, there is little information about his health.

The Netflix documentary “Schumacher”, published in September 2022, in which Schumacher reports, among other things, a near-death experience, gave a deep insight.

“Michael is still here.

Different, but he’s here,” said wife Corinna at the time.

She recently received a great compliment from her brother-in-law.

Michael Schumacher, the invisible resident of Gland: “We used to see him”

In Gland people had long since gotten used to life without - and yet somehow with - Michael Schumacher.

Last year, the American magazine

Sports Illustrated

devoted a detailed look back at the life of the seven-time Formula 1 world champion.

Jon Wertheim, one of the most renowned sports journalists in the USA, traveled to Switzerland and visited the 11,000-inhabitant community of Gland, where the Schumacher family has lived for over 20 years.

During his visit he spoke to two residents about Schumi.

“We used to see him, he was among us.

Of course no one sees him anymore.

Sometimes we see his wife riding.

But Michael?

Never,” a woman said to him at the time.

Schumi lives his “second” life behind the high fence of his villa right on the lake, with a view of the Swiss Alps.

He doesn't owe the public anything.

Michael Schumacher: People in Gland “don’t want to talk about him”

“We don’t want to forget him.

“But we don’t really want to talk about him,” said another resident thoughtfully at the time.

The name Schumacher will forever be associated with the place, and the people in Gland also know that.

The former Ferrari driver has long been more than proud of his son.

Mick Schumacher has also become a racing driver and still hopes for a cockpit in Formula 1. But he cannot share these moments with his father, who put him in a kart as a little peg.

“I would give up everything just for this,” Mick said about his father in the documentary.

Deep down, Schumi is certainly happy - he just can't show it.

His brother Ralf recently emphasized in an interview that he would like more peace and quiet for the Schumacher family.
