Former ski jumping world champion Markus Eisenbichler impressed in the Continental Cup and could make a comeback in the World Cup.

Munich – Markus Eisenbichler has worked his way out of his slump in form.

After placing third and first at the Continental Cup in Iron Mountain, he took fifth and eighth place in Planica and now second and first place in Lahti.

A few weeks ago it didn't look like it.

The former world champion also showed poor performances in the second-class Continental Cup and took a break from competitions at the turn of the year to train.

The knot seems to have broken.

“Congratulations to Eisei.

Thank God he has now shown really good jumps.

He really struggled this year,” said Stefan Horngacher on

In mid-December, things sounded different from the national coach: “It's incomprehensible to me that he can't bring anything together.

He often covers up a lot of things.

We need to talk about where we're headed.

Performance counts, that's just how it is.

It doesn’t matter how many medals you have hanging at home.”

Does the 32-year-old even have a chance of returning to the World Cup?

The squad may not be changed on the Raw Air Tour that is currently underway, but it is likely to be nominated for the ski flying in Planica.

“Definitely,” Horngacher replied on ARD when asked whether Eisenbichler was an option.

He could replace Stephan Leyhe or Karl Geiger, who are currently completely out of form.

“It's just difficult at the moment.

It only helps to keep going,” said Geiger, perplexed after missing the final round of three competitions in a row.

Federal coach promises Eisenbichler a World Cup comeback

In Planica, Eisenbichler may have the chance to show himself in the World Cup – for the first time this winter.

It would at least be a conciliatory end to a very weak season for the former world champion, who missed the Four Hills Tournament for the first time since 2012.
