Marco Gümm, Guido Burgstaller and Niklas Hedl, three Rapid Vienna players, received a phone call from Ralf Rangnick on Monday during the day.
Initially summoned with the Austrian selection for the next two friendly matches against Slovakia and Turkey, the latter learned of their sidelining.
Last month took place the sulfurous Vienna derby where the Rapid players won 3-0.
At the end of this meeting, the winners went to celebrate with their audience but homophobic chants were launched from the stands and several took part.
The coach having heard of these actions therefore decided not to select them for Austria's next two matches.
“This is something I will not tolerate in a team where I am the coach, whether at a club or at the head of the selection. Everything we support with the national team is the complete opposite of what they did, that's what I told the boys,”
he said when announcing the list. .
This exclusion is not definitive and the players still have a chance to be part of the team which will compete in the Euro in Germany this summer (June 14-July 14).
“I expect boys to understand the seriousness of their actions and what it means for people who are insulted or discriminated against in public like this.”
he concluded.
After the derby, 5 people from the club were suspended by the Austrian league, including the president and the Rapid coach for having participated in these chants with their supporters.
