For Rudi Völler, Brehme was more than the final goalscorer in 1990.
Munich – The death of world champion Andreas Brehme left football Germany in deep mourning.
The funeral of the long-time national player, who died of cardiac arrest, took place on Tuesday (March 12th).
Brehme was buried in the Ostfriedhof in the Giesing district of Munich.
DFB legend Rudi Völler also took part in the memorial service – and said an emotional farewell to his friend.
The current sports director even shed tears during his speech.
Völler's last words to Brehme: Goosebumps moment at the funeral service
200 invited companions paid their last respects to the winning goalscorer of the 1990 World Cup final.
Among them was Rudi Völler, who gave us goosebumps at the memorial service.
He recalled a memorable moment in Bundesliga history between him and Brehme.
On the last matchday of the 1995/96 season, both teams met Bayer Leverkusen (Völler) and 1. FC Kaiserslautern (Brehme).
The Werkself saved themselves with a 1-1 draw, but the Palatinate team were relegated.
Afterwards, Brehme cried bitter tears on Völler's shoulder.
A sign of friendship and solidarity between the two.
The DFB sports director now referred to this with his last words at the funeral: “I would have needed this shoulder on the morning of February 20th (the
anniversary of Brehme's death, editor's note
).
I miss you,” Völler
said in tears, according to the
Bild newspaper.

In a statement, FC Bayern spoke of a “moving speech” by Völler.

Völler also addressed the penalty in the 1990 World Cup final, before which he fouled and which Brehme converted, in his eulogy: “Andi cannot be reduced to the penalty.

said to have said about his friend, according to

In addition to the 63-year-old, numerous top-class German footballers were present, including Lothar Matthäus, Michael Ballack, Guido Buchwald, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and Uli Hoeneß.
Other members of the 1990s team also showed up, such as Pierre Littbarski, Karl-Heinz Riedle and Klaus Augenthaler.

And Jürgen Klinsmann flew in from the USA for Brehme's funeral.
A four-person entourage from Brehme's former club Inter Milan also traveled to Munich from Milan.
This was made up of his former teammates Giuseppe Bergomi, Nicola Berti, Alessandro Bianchi and Aldo Serena.
