Champions League: why PSG will not play the return match at Camp Nou against FC Barcelona

On March 16 or 17, the quarter-final return between FC Barcelona and PSG will be played at the Montjuïk Olympic stadium and not at Camp Nou,


It is now official after the draw this Friday noon, Kylian Mbappé and his partners will face FC Barcelona in the quarter-final of the Champions League.

Paris Saint-Germain will host the Spaniards in the first leg at the Parc des Princes on April 9 or 10 and will travel... to the Lluís-Companys stadium (Montjuïc) for the return.

Under construction since June 2023, the Camp Nou, historic lair of the Catalan club since 1957, is currently under tons of rubble.

Espai Barça, the name of the Barcelona infrastructure renovation project, is expected to be completed in June 2026 and will cost 1.45 billion euros, including 900 million for the renovation of the Camp Nou.

In the meantime, the Catalan team must play all of its home matches during the 2023-2024 season at the Lluís-Companys stadium, the Olympic stadium located on Montjuïc hill where the 1992 Games took place and which enjoys a capacity of 55,926 spectators.

Catalan leaders are planning a return to Camp Nou, with a reduced capacity for the public, for the start of the 2024-2025 season.

Work began this summer around the Camp Nou.

Paris Saint-Germain will therefore have to play their return match in an unknown stadium, but in a much weaker atmosphere than at the Camp Nou, scene of the Remontada in 1997.

The Lluis Companys Olympic stadium - named in homage to a former president of Catalonia executed by the Francoists in 1940 - was built for the 1929 universal exhibition. Completely renovated for the 1992 Games, it was the scene of the coronation of Mary -José Pérec over 400 meters.

PSG and Barça have faced each other five times in the Champions League, including four in the knockout stage.

This confrontation will allow Luis Enrique to return to his former club, at the head of which he had achieved the famous “comeback” against the capital club on March 8, 2017.

If it qualifies for the semi-finals of the Champions League, the capital club will face the winner of the opposition between Atlético and Dortmund.

The other poster will therefore be played between the winner of Real Madrid-Manchester City and Arsenal-Bayern Munich.
