The green carpet in the stadium at Gröben is ready.

After initial teething problems, the new turf is intended to lay the foundation for a successful European Championship in Scotland.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen – The valuable new lawn was actually supposed to find its way to Garmisch-Partenkirchen last week, but the bad weather ruined this plan.

So the Schwab company, which has re-equipped a total of four European Championship base camps, postponed the complex campaign until this week.

On Tuesday afternoon the first trucks with the huge rolls of turf rolled in from Waidhofen in Bavaria (near Schrobenhausen).

Employees there had freshly peeled the greens overnight.

As a result, everything had to happen quickly.

On site at the stadium on Gröben, the employees loaded the freight onto a forklift while it was still wet.

This transported the 2.20 meter wide rolls, which have space for around 20 meters of turf, precisely into a laying machine.

This, in turn, floats almost above the ground on four rubber tracks and ensures minimal stress on the lower layer.

By Thursday, six skilled workers were at work.

For the European Football Championship in Germany: Turf should rest for six weeks

Günther Schwab, the boss of the company, came to the market town himself to keep an eye on the work so that everything was in immaculate condition at the end.

“If we have our way, the lines can be drawn on Friday and the first footballers can train on Saturday,” assures Schwab.

But it doesn't happen that quickly.

In any case, there is a six-week rest period for the new playing field.

“The connection between the lawn and the substructure must first be ensured in order to be able to counteract the shifting of the sod under heavy use,” emphasizes town hall spokeswoman Silvia reisen-Schropp.

All maintenance measures such as hole-punching and sanding of the area will be carried out by a specialist company, but also by our own greenkeeper.

“We want to achieve the best possible result.”

Scotland as a guest at Gröben: Best conditions for a successful European Championship

Those responsible for the stadium don't need to worry too much about the space, says Schwab: "The Gröben is an open stadium, the sun can do its work here." So that the athletes feel comfortable in the years to come, recommends the company owner, enough fertilizer and regular cutting.

“Otherwise it will regress.” Overexertion should also be avoided if possible if you want to inspire the next generation of footballers with the turf.

“The breaks used to be longer,” says Schwab, who is equipping four European Championship base camps.

This will not be an obstacle for the Scots.

“The national team can easily play for four weeks in a row with the right care.” So nothing stands in the way of a good European Championship tournament for the guests from the island.

People in the town hall are pleased that the work is even a little ahead of schedule.

It paid off that the local council gave the green light last year without having a concrete commitment for the European Championships in its pocket.

“The mild winter did the rest,” says Buyer-Schropp.
