Before March 23rd, Florian Wirtz would have been the record holder with his goal.
But Baumgartner's goal also falls far short of the amateur records.
Bratislava/Lyon – Most goals in a first half of the season, so many goals as a newcomer or the fastest hat-trick after coming on as a substitute.
There are many goal records in football, sometimes more, sometimes less meaningful, but this international match Saturday shortly before the 2024 European Championship should definitely go down in history.
Two players scored in less than ten seconds – few were that quick before them.
From a German perspective, despite the win against France (2-0), they could easily have missed out on a goal.
They both had a good laugh.

Baumgartner probably scores the fastest goal - Wirtz's eight-second goal is not enough
After just eight seconds, the DFB team was leading in the friendly against France on Saturday (March 23).
However, all considerations as to whether this could have been the fastest goal in the history of international matches were superseded almost as quickly.
Three hours earlier, Christoph Baumgartner made it 1-0 for the Austrian national team against Slovakia (2-0 for Austria) after seven seconds.
According to ORF, the Leipzig professional scored the fastest goal in international match history.
The previous record holder was the Belgian Christian Benteke, who scored against Gibraltar after 8.1 seconds in 2016 - information according to the ORF archive.
If Baumgartner hadn't scored 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds before Wirtz - assuming the whistle was blown exactly - he would probably have been the new record holder.
When the ball crossed the goal line for the first time in Lyon, the clock had barely reached eight seconds.
After all, Wirtz remains the fastest goal in DFB history.
The previous record holder was Lukas Podolski, who needed nine seconds to score against Ecuador in 2013.
Wirtz and Baumgartner are far from probably the fastest goal in football history
However, Baumgartner and Wirtz are a long way from probably the fastest goals in football history.
According to the Guinness World Records website, Uruguayan Ricardo Olivera scored in just 2.8 seconds in December 1998.

Ryan Hall probably scored faster, but not recognized by the record book.
In the depths of the English amateur game, the former professional scored 1-0 for his team after a hand-timed 2.31 seconds.
Florian Rupprecht from FC Langengeisling needed a little longer, namely 2.9 seconds, in November 2023.
In the district league game against SVN Munich, Rupprecht scored the first goal of the game from the kick-off.
For Wirtz & Co., there is always room for improvement, even if the performance against France was rightly rewarded with good marks.
