The spectacular descent on the Matterhorn is off the racing calendar and will no longer take place in the 2024/25 World Cup season.
Munich – As in 2022, the Ski World Cup season should open on the legendary Matterhorn in 2023.
But once again both runs had to be canceled because the weather did not allow any racing.
Zermatt/Cervinia won't get another chance because the runs have been removed from the calendar, as the organizers decided in consultation with the FIS and the ski associations of Switzerland and Italy.
No Matterhorn race in the 2024/25 World Cup calendar

reports, the FIS officials are said to have made a proposal to the organizers of the World Cup on the Matterhorn to postpone the races to a later date in the season.
However, this was rejected due to the low accommodation capacity in high season.
The World Cup was then canceled completely.
“Even if everything organizationally were set to green, there are currently so many fundamental questions open regarding the future World Cup calendar that, after careful consideration in dialogue with all stakeholders, we have come to the decision to suspend the Matterhorn Speed Opening,” said Diego Zuger, managing director at Swiss-Ski together with Walter Reusser, was quoted in a statement.
There will be no Alpine World Cup races in Zermatt/Cervinia next season.

It is not known whether the so-called “Matterhorn Speed Opening” could find a place in the World Cup calendar again in the future.
The FIS and the organizers at least did not say that the project was off the table forever.

The decision not to hold World Cup races on the Matterhorn next season should actually only become public in a few days.
FIS President Johan Eliasch announced at the World Cup finals in Saalbach-Hinterglemm that no downhill runs in Zermatt/Cervinia are planned next season.
