Update from March 24th, 7:10 a.m.:

George Russell was close behind Fernando Alonso on the last lap.

Now the incident that led to Russell's accident goes to the stewards.

Alonso says he had problems with the car and concentrated forward rather than backwards.

Mercedes now wants to know this exactly and evaluate the data from Aston Martin.

To them it looks like Alonso was deliberately trying to slow Russell down.

Update from March 24th, 7:06 a.m.:

Carlos Sainz was the one driver last year who was able to stop Red Bull's winning streak.

He also seems to be the one who can stop Verstappen in 2024.

He was able to overtake the Dutchman after just the first lap.

However, Helmut Marko also says that if Verstappen had been able to take part, the race would probably have turned out differently.

Lap 58/58:

The race ends under the safety car: Carlos Sainz wins the Australian Grand Prix!

Charles Leclerc completes the Ferrari fairytale.

Norris completes the podium.

For Hülkenberg that means P9 and points!

Double victory for Ferrari, Lando Norris completes the podium.

Australian Grand Prix: Russell is on the track on the last lap

Lap 58/58:

RUSSELL IS WIDE ON THE TRACK!

THE BRITAN MUST HAVE CRUSHED INTO THE GANG PRETTY HARD.

BUT HE'S OKAY.

Lap 57/58:

Looks like Leclerc was just saving his tires!

The Monegasse now snatches the fastest lap from Norris and at the same time increases the gap to him.

Round 56/58:

Exciting duels lie ahead!

Russell really wants to get 6th place and get past Alonso.

Norris and Leclerc are still two seconds apart.

That could be something for the Brit in the last lap.

Lap 54/58:

Five laps left to go.

Norris is getting closer and closer to Leclerc.

In the end it will be another exciting duel between the two for P2!

Lap 52/58:

Carlos Sainz drives an incredibly good race in first place.

This could be his third win.

What about Leclerc, can he defend and keep second place against Norris?

Lap 50/58:

Gasly receives a five second penalty.

This would mean that he would currently fall one place back to P15.

Nico Hülkenberg was able to score two points today.

Formula 1 in Melbourne: Hülkenberg on the hunt for points

Round 48/58:

Hülkenberg has a good chance of getting another point for himself and the team.

There are still ten laps to go and the German is still in P10.

Magnussen protects at the back.

Lap 46/58:

Russell was in the pits and gets new hard tires again.

He wants to be in P5 at the end of the race.

Lap 43/58:

Sainz and Leclerc are currently leading the field again.

But how long?

Norris sets the fastest lap of the race and at least has tires that have five laps less than Leclerc's.

Lap 42/58:

Good pit stop by Norris.

Carlos Sainz then comes into the pits and wants to get new tires.

Theoretically, the gap to Leclerc should be big enough for him to stay ahead.

Lap 40/58:

Piastri has just taken a little trip to the meadow.

His tires are clearly worn out, so he has to go straight to the pits and get new tires.

Norris will come right after you.

Australian Grand Prix: bad stop at Zhou

Lap 38/58:

Norris is currently setting his personal best time.

But Leclerc quickly sets the fastest lap of the race.

Theoretically, McLaren would have to react slowly and bring at least one car into the pits as well.

Lap 36/58:

Zhou has a big problem in the pits.

He just stood there with his mechanics for almost 15 seconds.

Now he is last.

Lap 35/58:

Leclerc has just complained over the radio that his tires are worn out.

Now he comes into the pits and gets new tires.

And Leclerc comes out RIGHT before Perez and Alonso, that only went well!

It almost looked as if Perez would get past him, but the Monegasque man was able to stay in front.

Lap 31/58:

Sainz and Leclerc are now separated by more than seven seconds!

And Norris is now getting closer and closer to Leclerc.

The Monegasse now has to hope and fear that his tires will still hold out.

Lap 29/58:

Lando Norris was just allowed to pass his teammate.

The Brit seems to have better speed.

Formula 1 in Australia: Leclerc cannot keep up with Sainz

Lap 27/58:

Leclerc doesn't seem to have such good tires at the front anymore.

He now has a pretty big gap with his teammate.

But Piastri is also managing his tires and isn't doing any fast laps at the moment.

Lap 25/58:

Things are going really well for Hülkenberg.

He is in the DRS window with Albon and could now finish in the points!

The medium tire just seems to be better than the hard one.

Lap 23/58:

Sainz was able to open a small gap to Leclerc at the moment.

Hülkenberg has just asked for a driver swap in P12.

He has the faster tires and was able to pass Magnussen, now in P11.

Lap 20/58:

Sainz and Leclerc are currently leading the field.

The two could bring home a perfect race for Ferrari.

They are closely followed by Piastri and Norris.

Unfortunately, the latter had the worst strategy of the four - started second and is currently fourth.

Lap 18/58:

Sainz is annoyed, shortly before the virtual safety car he was in the pit lane and got new tires.

Alonso, on the other hand, was able to time it perfectly and has only now gotten new tires and is driving in P5.

Australian Grand Prix: Hamilton is out with engine problems

Lap 16/58:

Russell easily passes Gasly and takes P7.

Hülkenberg is still in P6, but he wasn't in the pits yet.

Sainz was just in the box.

AND LEWIS HAMILTON GOES SLOW.

THE BRITISH HAS TO PARK HIS CAR.

Lap 15/58:

Norris comes into the pits but will lose his place to Leclerc and even Piastri.

Perez comes out of the pits right in front of Hamilton and really spreads out in front of the Brit.

Although he has the better and warmed up tires, he can't get past the Red Bull.

Lap 14/58:

Perez has major problems with his rear tires, as he has almost no grip left.

Nico Hülkenberg is currently driving a good race in P7!

Let's see if he can stay in the points.

Lap 12/58:

Leclerc and Piastri were just at the pit stop together.

But the Ferrari was lucky, his team was a little faster and he was able to stay ahead of the McLaren.

Now Norris should actually follow suit, otherwise he will have to say goodbye to his second place.

Lap 9/58:

Leclerc really wants to get past Norris, but he can't quite manage it the entire time and has to watch his tires.

Bottas just had a miserable pit stop.

There was something wrong with his left front wheel that cost him a lot of time.

There's already smoke here and the brakes even caught fire in the pit lane.

Formula 1 in Melbourne: Verstappen is out of the race

Lap 5/58:

Verstappen is in the pits.

AND THAT’S IT FOR THE DUTCH!

He has to turn off his Red Bull.

The other drivers and fans are happy.

Carlos Sainz is still 1st followed by Norris and Leclerc

Lap 4/58:

Verstappen has smoke coming from the back of his car!

The Dutchman has major problems with his car.

His rear brake doesn't seem to be working properly, there's a fire in the back.

He has to go into the pits and maybe even park his car!

Round 2/58:

CARLOS SAINZ TAKES THE LEAD IN AUSTRALIA!

The Spaniard made it past Max Verstappen directly on the second lap.

Round 1/58: IT STARTS IN AUSTRALIA!

VERSTAPPEN GETS AWAY WELL, CARLOS SAINZ ALSO TRIES TO STAY CLOSE TO VERSTAPPEN.

LANDO NORRIS CAN'T STAY THAT CLOSE TO SAINZ.

PEREZ HAD TO GIVE UP HIS 6TH PLACE DIRECTLY TO RUSSELL.

First report from March 24th, 5:00 a.m.:

Sergio Perez was moved back three starting positions after qualifying because he had held up Nico Hülkenberg on his fast lap.

Now it starts from P6 for the Mexican.

Zhou will start from the pit lane.

Formula 1 in Melbourne: Sainz far ahead after appendectomy

Melbourne – Formula 1 races in Australia.

Max Verstappen narrowly beat Carlos Sainz in qualifying.

Which car has the better racing pace?

During qualifying in Australia, after the free practice sessions and the first qualifying laps, Verstappen took a surprising pole position.

Not even Helmut Marko had expected this after the previous rounds.

In Q3, Verstappen repeatedly put his Red Bull in P1 and in the end no one could push him away.

His biggest competitor throughout was Carlos Sainz.

For a while it actually looked as if the Spaniard would be on pole - even though he was still on the operating table two weeks ago.

He had to miss the race in Jeddah due to appendicitis.

After qualifying in Australia, Sainz said he still didn't feel completely comfortable, but he could ride without pain.

In the end it was enough for P2.

Melbourne Grand Prix: Sargeant has to give up his car for Albon

There were unusual circumstances within the team at Williams.

In the first free practice session, Alex Albon crashed his car into the barriers so hard that under no circumstances could it be repaired for the race.

There is no replacement frame.

So Williams can only start with one car this weekend: Logan Sargeant.

Shortly after the second free practice session, however, the racing team announced that Sargeant would not be in their car.

The American has to make room for Albon, who drove his car into the barriers.

The team wrote on social media that it was a difficult decision, but that they chose the driver who had a higher chance of finishing in the points.

For Williams, this is clearly Albon.

After all, he finished P12 in qualifying, so the points aren't too far away from there.
