The DFB team is finally creating European Championship euphoria and the fans are celebrating with a new goal anthem.
However, it must have been a unique experience.
Frankfurt – “Major Tom” is on everyone’s lips.
Even after the German national team's 2-1 win against the Netherlands, Peter Schilling's 80s hit is still a topic of discussion.
Of all people, the DFB made sure of this, changing the goal anthems during the classic international match on Tuesday and thus causing confusion.
Online petition calls for Major Tom to be the new German goal anthem
Even before the game started, Thomas Müller was in “Major Tom” fever and was spotted singing along to the cult hit during the warm-up.
“That’s fun.
“Major Tom is a cool song to go along to, you have to say that,” said the 34-year-old as a Schlager fan after the 2-1 win against Holland.
There had previously been a real hype about the song among German football fans.
Days before the duel against Oranje, an online petition was even launched calling for “Totally detached” by Peter Schilling to be the new German goal anthem and to replace the old goal music “Kernkraft 400” by Zombie Nation.
DFB fulfills fan's wish and plays Major Tom as the goal anthem
The petition soon reached over 60,000 signatures.
Speculation quickly arose that the DFB could bow to the wishes of the fans in the international match against the Netherlands.
Even Schilling himself commented on the fans' desire for a goal anthem.
And indeed: When Maximilian Mittelstädt's much-celebrated equalizer (11th) was met, "Completely detached" rang through Frankfurt's Deutsche Bank Park.
When Niclas Füllkrug scored the opening goal shortly before the end of the game (85th), the well-known goal music “Kernkraft 400” echoed through the Frankfurter Rund.

Confusion about the goal anthem: Apparently Major Tom was just a one-time thing
Apparently the intonation of “Major Tom” as a goal anthem was just a one-time thing.
“Kernkraft 400” is likely to be played again at the upcoming European Championship dress rehearsals next June against Ukraine and Greece.
At the 2024 European Championship, the question of which goal anthem will be played after Germany goals will be a minor issue anyway.
Then UEFA decides what music will be played after the goals.
Müller on the anthem change: “In the end it doesn’t matter to us”
Thomas Müller didn't notice the anthem change during the game anyway.
“But in the end it doesn’t matter to us what music is played when the winning goal is scored.
“Only the music of happiness is playing inside,” explained the FC Bayern offensive man.
