Jamal Musiala is badly fouled against Dortmund. The Bayern fans demand the red card. The referee apologizes to the FCB star.
Munich – It was a key scene in the classic between FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund. In the 31st minute, FCB star Jamal Musiala was fouled hard from behind by BVB defender Julian Ryerson. But referee Harm Osmers allowed play to continue, to the dismay of many Bayern fans, who were fuming and demanding a red card. After the game, the referee apologized in front of the TV cameras.
Musiala escapes serious injury after hard foul
It was a brutal scene that hurt just to watch: Ryerson stepped on Musiala's Achilles tendon in a duel. The Bayern star writhed on the pitch in pain, but was able to continue playing until he was substituted in the 63rd minute.
There is apparently no injury to the German hopeful for the 2024 European Championship. “I don’t think he’s injured,” said coach Thomas Tuchel, who raged about a denied hand penalty after BVB’s defeat, at the press conference after the game.

The whistle remains silent: the referee does not react to a foul against Musiala
“In the game I'm focused on Can playing the ball. I notice that too. Ryerson's action escapes me a bit, there wasn't really much focus on it," admitted referee Osmers on Sky. After looking at the pictures, the referee revised his opinion: “If I look at it like that, it's already dark yellow. I went through that and apologized to the player for it. The aim would have been to see that in the game.”
Osmers did not want to make a final decision as to whether the action necessarily required a dismissal. Rather, he pointed out that Ryerson had “also touched the ball to some extent with the tip of his foot” and explained that he would like to “take a closer look at the hit pattern,” especially since “the real brutality and pressure” were not quite there yet. “But it’s dark yellow.” The video assistant wasn’t turned on in the scene.

Bayern fans demand red for brutal foul – referee apologizes to Musiala
The Bayern fans naturally saw things completely differently and would have liked to see a red card. It was all the more bitter from their point of view that the culprit scored shortly before the end to make the final score 2-0. We've rounded up some of the reactions on social media to Ryerson's unpunished foul on Musiala:
“Referee stands a meter away from Ryerson, who is fouling Musiala's calf with his shoe outstretched, but apparently that's not even enough for Osmers to commit a foul.”
“Referee says “pressure” is not yet decisive in Ryerson’s action against Musiala. Ok, so next time I’ll only give a red when Musiala’s Achilles tendon is actually through.”
“That Ryerson, with his nasty kick, could have cost Musiala the home European Championship.”
“Ryerson's open sole on Musiala was closer to red than 'no foul' or is it just me seeing it that way? The bad thing: the referee was less than 5 meters away.”
“At least Harm Osmers admits that he didn’t see the Ryerson vs. Musiala scene closely and that “dark yellow” would have been the right decision.”
In addition to the tough fight against Musiala, another action was in focus. A Hummels scene divides opinion: hand, dangerous game or just brilliantly clarified?
