SV Werder Bremen also lost their home game against VfL Wolfsburg 0-2 and suffered their fourth defeat in a row. The DeichStube match report.

Bremen

 - Even after the international break,

SV Werder Bremen

's series of defeats in the

Bundesliga

continues: In the home game against

VfL Wolfsburg,

head coach Ole Werner's team had to admit defeat 0-2 (0-1) on Saturday afternoon. It was the fourth defeat in a row for Bremen, who had to play outnumbered for a long time after Anthony Jung was sent off before Wolfsburg's Maxcence Lacroix, the goalscorer of the 1-0, was sent off early. Lovro Majer ultimately made the decision. While it was Wolfsburg's first three-pointer after eleven games without a win, Werder, who still have 30 points in their account, must gradually fear that they will still experience an uneasy end to the season.

“We played well for 35 minutes and had three good opportunities. We leave them too inconsistent, which was typical of our game today and in the last few weeks. “We are simply not consistent enough in decisive moments,” said Ole Werner angrily. And emphasized: “We are currently not up to speed in a handful of scenes per game and they are blowing up in our face mercilessly. That’s why we are rightly left without any points today.”

Werder Bremen against VfL Wolfsburg with five changes to the starting eleven

Compared to the 1-2 defeat at 1. FC Union Berlin, Werner made five personnel changes to his starting lineup, some of which were not entirely voluntary. While captain

Marco Friedl

returned to the team after recovering from a torn syndesmotic ligament and Romano Schmid returned to the team after serving a yellow card suspension, Felix Agu, Leonardo Bittencourt and Skelly Alvero represented the suspended Mitchell Weiser, Jens Stage and Senne Lynen in his starting eleven debut. The home team didn't initially notice any uncertainty because of the many changes, even though the first big chance of the game belonged to

VfL Wolfsburg

.

After a corner from Maximilian Arnold, it was central defender Cedric Zesiger who hit the crossbar with his head (11th). Felix Agu had previously not been able to hold his own against the Swiss. As a result,

Werder Bremen

had the greater share of the game, pressed energetically and showed good offensive attempts, which, however, fizzled out in the final third. Alvero recorded the first dangerous Bremen shot after just under half an hour, but

Maxence Lacroix

was still in the way with his head (29th). It was the start of spectacular minutes in which the hosts found themselves in several dangerous situations.

Nick Woltemade

should

have given his team the lead,

but was denied by Wolfsburg keeper Pavao Pervan (30') after a pass from

Marvin Ducksch

. Seconds earlier, Deman had been unable to control a pass in the penalty area, and seconds later Woltemade unfortunately blocked a shot on goal from his teammate Bittencourt (31'). At the latest when Ducksch missed the target after a nice move over Woltemade and Schmid (39th), a Bremen lead would have been deserved. However, things turned out differently.

Werder Bremen's Anthony Jung was sent off early against VfL Wolfsburg after an emergency stop

A long ball from Arnold was enough shortly before half-time to tear Werder's defense apart. In the end,

Anthony Jung

was only able to stop

Kevin Behrens,

who was born in Bremen, with a foul -

referee Sascha Stegemann,

after consulting the video assistant, decided on the emergency brake and sent the 32-year-old off the field with a red card. For

Werder Bremen

it was the first sending off of the current season. And that wasn't the only setback the team had to accept before the half-time whistle. After a corner from Ridle Baku, the ball ended up in a detour at Lacroix, who scored from eleven meters through Agu's legs to make it 1-0 for Wolfsburg (45th + 4). “Due to a stupid action we get the red card and then the goal straight away. “That shouldn’t happen to us,” said Captain Friedl angrily.

The first scenes after the restart also belonged to the guests: first Behrens shot over the goal from a central position (48th), then Yannick Gerhardt's header was blocked by Alvero (54th). On the other side, Schmid once again sent a sign of life for Bremen with a long-range shot (66th), but it was immediately afterwards that things became really dangerous again in the Werder penalty area. After a nasty ricochet from Olivier Deman, Behrens and Gerhardt put substitute

Lovro Majer

in the spotlight, who found his match in the strong reaction of Werder keeper

Michael Zetterer

(67').

Home defeat against VfL Wolfsburg: Werder Bremen slides deeper into crisis after their fourth defeat in a row

With one man less,

Werder Bremen

had a lot of trouble getting in front of the opponent's goal, and the substitution of Naby Keita, who came on for Woltemade in the 68th minute, didn't change that. At the beginning of the final phase, however, there was suddenly an equal number on the pitch again because referee Stegemann also assessed a foul by

Maxence Lacroix

on Schmid as an

emergency brake

(76th). After that, Bremen threw everything forward again. Coach Werner brought on debutant Isak Hansen-Aaroen for Alvero (79th) to give the offensive new impetus. However, this didn't bring any results, on the contrary: shortly afterwards the game was decided.

After

Felix Agu

initially scratched

Kevin Paredes

' shot off the line (83'), Majer made it 2-0 (84'). The goal was preceded by a bad pass from Keita, which left the Bremen defense completely open. In the final minutes of the game, U23 player Joel Imasuen celebrated a

Bundesliga

debut, and Leon Opitz also gained further practice in his third appearance of the season after a long injury. However, that didn't change the result. Next matchday,

Werder Bremen

will continue with the away game at Eintracht Frankfurt (Friday, April 5th, 8:30 p.m.). “We have to stay calm. Even when everything was good, I said that we would take it from game to game. And nothing will change now,” said Werder defender Milos Veljkovic. (dco/mbü)

SV Werder Bremen:

 Zetterer – Veljkovic, Friedl, Jung (43rd red card/emergency brake) – Agu (89th Opitz), Alvero (79th Hansen-Aaröen), Deman – Schmid (89th Imasuen), Bittencourt (68. Groß) – Woltemade (68. Keita), Ducksch

UPDATE WERDER LIVE TICKER

 >>>

5:26 p.m.: The ticker man says goodbye at this point and his colleagues take over. We'll see each other again next Friday when Werder tries to overturn the problem in Frankfurt. See you then!

5:25 p.m.: Werder remains winless, it's their fourth defeat in a row. Even worse: This ends VfL Wolfsburg's eleven-game losing streak, moving them within two points of Werder. The red card that Jung saw shortly before half-time (42') was a deciding factor. Shortly before the half-time break, the guests took advantage of their advantage with a Lacroix goal after a Wolfsburg corner (45th + 3). As a result, VfL made good use of their advantage and kept Werder away from their own goal - until the goalscorer Lacroix made a serious mistake and pulled the emergency brake against Schmid (76). There was no real comeback, because just seconds after a great chance for Paredes, it was Majer who made it 2-0 after a bad pass from Keita (84th) and decided the game.

5:24 p.m.: Closing time! Werder loses 0-2 against VfL Wolfsburg.

90.+2:

Yellow again for Paredes. That should no longer be decisive for the game.

90.+1:

No danger, there are still four minutes extra.

90th min:

Corner for Wolfsburg.

89th min:

Opitz comes on for Agu, Imasuen makes his debut and comes on for Schmid.

89th min:

Hansen Aaröen receives a yellow card because he fouled Arnold.

87th min:

Werder pulled the plug on the goal they conceded. The Green-Whites now seem extremely unsettled and at a loss going forward.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against VfL Wolfsburg: Serious bad pass, Wolfsburg increased

84th min: Keita plays a bad pass in the build-up, Majer is cleared, has a lot of space on the way to the goal and lobs the ball over Zetterer into the goal. Is that bitter?

84th min: Goal for Wolfsburg, 2-0.

83rd min: Next big chance for Wolfsburg! Suddenly Paredes is free and shoots, Zetterer blocks the ball, which spins towards the line, but Agu knocks it away!

82nd min:

Wolfsburg makes three changes: Fischer, Wind and Vranckx come on, Behrens, Sarr and Gerhardt are off work.

81st min:

Deman crosses from the left to the far post, where Agu rises, but Paredes hits the header. Free kick VfL.

80th min:

Zesiger sees a yellow card after a foul on Agu.

79th min:

Werner changes: Alvero leaves the pitch, Hansen-Aaroen makes his Bundesliga debut.

78th min:

That should of course change the game now. In terms of personnel, Werder was the better team, has to come now and has land in sight again!

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against VfL Wolfsburg: Red for Wolfsburg, is there anything else going on in the final phase?

76th min: Red for Wolfsburg! Goalscorer Lacroix flies! The defender is the last man to receive a ball badly and has to fight against Schmid. There is slight contact, which according to Stegemann and VAR Winkmann is enough for a red card!

75th min:

Majer crosses from the right into the Werder penalty area, but doesn't get through.

74th min:

There is no real rebellion from Werder here because Wolfsburg keeps the ball safely in their own ranks.

72nd min:

Alveror also sees a yellow card after a tactical foul against Arnold.

70th min:

Bornauw sees yellow after a foul on Schmid in the right half field.

68th min:

Double substitution at Werder: Bittencourt and Woltemade out, with Keita and Groß in the game.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against VfL Wolfsburg: Michael Zetterer keeps Werder in the game

67th min: This MUST be 2-0 for Wolfsburg! Deman scrapes a bad pass from Alvero from the sideline and puts it directly into Behrens' path. He draws the Werder defense towards him, passes to the left to Gerhardt and he then sees the completely free Majer on the right, who is completely blank in front of Zetterer and just needs to push in. Zetterer saves with a brilliant one-on-one save!

66th min:

After a Wolfsburg free kick, Schmid gets to the ball and fires a shot from 20 meters, but clearly over to the right.

64th min:

Woltemade holds on to a ball in front and wants to pass it to the right to Agu, but his pass is too sharp and goes out of the goal.

63. Min:

Werder has now come to terms with the minority a little better and is now taking more part in the game again. But Ole Werner's men can't make it significantly across the halfway line.

61st min:

Arnold looks for Maehle with a pass, but fortunately it goes a bit too far for Werder, a goal kick.

60th min:

First change for the guests. Baku leaves the pitch and Majer enters it.

59th min:

Friedl is on the ball with a great tackle in front of Baku and receives applause from the crowd.

58th min:

It continues, Bittencourt is there again.

57th min:

Bittencourt is on the ground and is being treated.

54th min:

The corner comes to the far post, where Gerhardt is completely blank, but heads into a crowd of five players so that the ball doesn't reach the goal line.

53rd min:

The next corner for Wolfsburg from the right.

52nd min:

Woltemade claims the ball against three opponents on the right and takes a free kick.

51st min:

Baku sees yellow, he fouled Deman.

50th min:

You can clearly see that Werder are outnumbered. The balls are gone quickly and most of the game takes place in Bremen's half.

48th min: And the first dangerous Wolfsburg finish. Baku puts the ball into the penalty area from the right, Behrens shoots from the turn, but over it.

47th min:

Arnold brings the ball dangerously in front of the goal, but Zetterer is there and punches the ball out of the danger zone.

47th min:

We start with a free kick for VfL from the right half field.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against VfL Wolfsburg: Outnumbered against the deficit - it continues

46th min: Let's continue!

4:34 p.m.:

The teams return to the pitch.

4:20 p.m.:

That was the last action in the first half. Ducksch gets a yellow card because he complains. An actually good game from Werder suddenly turns completely around in the last minutes of the half. Wolfsburg not only leads 1-0 thanks to Lacroix's goal, but Werder is also outnumbered due to Jung's red card. It will be a tall mountain that Bremen will have to climb to avoid their fourth defeat in a row.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against VfL Wolfsburg: First red, then conceded a goal – Werder is facing problems

45.+4: The corner sails from the left to the far post, where Gerhardt actually only has to push the ball over the line. He puts the ball down to Lacroix, who finishes from a central position. Agu deflects the ball, Zetterer just watches in amazement as the ball rolls over the line on the left to make it 1-0 for VfL.

45.+4: Goal for Wolfsburg, Lacroix scores to make it 1-0 for VfL.

45.+3:

Agu clears, corner from the other side.

45.+3:

Another corner for VfL.

45.+2:

Alvero now moves into Jung's position.

45.+1:

Arnold hits the ball flat into the wall. By the way, there are three minutes of added time.

45.+1:

Free kick centrally in front of the goal, 17 meters to the goal.

43rd min: First Werder has an attack at the front, but Bittencourt can't get the ball under control. Then it goes the other way, Behrens gets a long ball, who falls in a duel with Jung. At first Stegemann points to the point, but quickly reverses the decision, gives a free kick and red for Jung because of an emergency brake. A right decision.

42nd min: Straight red for Jung.

39th min: The next very good chance for Werder! Woltemade passes through superbly to Schmid, who pulls to the baseline at the six-yard box and puts the ball backwards. Ducksch finishes centrally from a short distance, but is just blocked and the ball just misses the right post. The following corner brings nothing.

39th min:

Zesiger is in focus again. He gets the ball into his hand from his own man in the penalty area, but it's there, referee Stegemann and the VAR also see it that way.

37th min:

Zetterer plays a strong long ball to Schmid on the right. He has the ball in front of Zesiger, but is pushed from behind so that he cannot control the ball. Can you whistle?

34th min:

The game takes its first little break after the exciting past few minutes.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against VfL Wolfsburg: Nick Woltemade misses the huge chance

30th min: But just a few seconds later, Werder suddenly has a huge chance to make it 1-0! First Deman loses a high ball in the penalty area, but follows up and gets the ball back. He passes to Ducksch, who could shoot, but sees the completely blank Woltemade on the left and serves it. The Younster can actually choose the corner, but then pushes the ball centrally into Pervan's hands.

30th min:

Not dangerous.

29th min: Werder's first really good attack! Woltemade holds the ball and initiates. Agu passes the right back to Alvero, who moves inwards and finishes with his left. The ball is deflected and goes out of the goal.

26th min:

Bittencourt gets the ball on the left and leaves two opponents standing with a feint. He takes a few steps and then brings the ball towards Ducksch, who takes off. But he can't get the ball under control and the defense can run the ball away from him.

23rd min:

On the other hand, Woltemade is released and goes into a duel against Zesiger in the penalty area. He wraps himself around his opponent and pulls towards the baseline, but Zesiger falls and holds his face. Stegemann whistles. The television pictures show: Woltemade accidentally, but clearly, hits his opponent in the face with his arm.

23rd min:

The ball is easy prey for Zetterer.

22nd min:

Free kick for Wolfsburg deep in the left half field. Schmid fouled.

20th min:

The game hasn't been a treat so far. Both teams attack each other aggressively, which is why the balls are always quickly gone. After initial uncertainty, Werder is now becoming a little more offensive.

19th min:

Ducksch takes the corner from the right briefly, Jung tries it from a similar position as Arnold before, but his shot turns to the left away from the goal and sails out of the goal.

18th min:

Woltemade puts Bittencourt on the left with a nice pass. The offensive man places the ball flat behind the defense, where Agu is just about passed. Corner for Werder!

17th min:

Arnold has a bit of space on the right in front of the penalty area and simply takes the shot. Zetterer buries the powerful shot beneath himself.

15th min:

The subsequent free kick from Wolfsburg's left half field poses no danger.

14th min:

Agu sees the first yellow card of the game. Zetterer puts him in trouble with a bone-breaking pass, the ball bounces far off the right-back's foot when he receives it. As he follows up, he hits Paredes. The decision is understandable.

Werder Bremen in the live ticker against VfL Wolfsburg: The bar is shaking

11. Min: Latte!

on the other hand, probably knows exactly what to expect in Bremen - both in terms of sport and atmosphere. The 56-year-old has already been a guest coach on the Weser three times and his balance is balanced. A win with Ingolstadt (2015/16 season) is offset by a defeat (2016/17) and a draw (2017/18) with RB Leipzig. “It will be a super difficult game for us. There is always a good atmosphere in Bremen and we need an absolute top performance to survive there,” he says.

If

Werder Bremen

wants to prevent that, the team has to improve significantly compared to their recent defeat at Union Berlin.

Ole Werner

is also

aware of this. After the games against Hoffenheim and Dortmund, in which the performances were much more appealing, there was already the third 1-2 defeat in a row in Köpenick. “In the last few weeks, despite a poor performance, especially in Berlin, we were always trying to score points. The close results show that,” says Werner, but also emphasizes: “If at the end there are no points three times, you can see that something was always missing. And if it's only a goal difference, it's often about effectiveness and consistency and not about fundamentals, otherwise you'll lose the games more significantly." Werder now wants to bring these qualities back onto the pitch against the Wolves. (dco)
