After Xabi Alonso's rejection, Julian Nagelsmann is coming into focus as a possible returnee coach at FC Bayern. Lothar Matthäus would be in favor of it. In his opinion, there is a catch.
Munich - The list of candidates is getting smaller: Xabi Alonso is staying with Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen. The 42-year-old Spaniard would reportedly have been the club's ideal solution to succeed head coach Thomas Tuchel, who has to leave FC Bayern after this season.
Successor to Thomas Tuchel: Lothar Matthäus advises Julian Nagelsmann
So the search for a Tuchel successor continues. Sky expert Lothar Matthäus spoke out in favor of bringing Julian Nagelsmann back in the wake of Bayern's defeat in the Bundesliga classic against Borussia Dortmund (0-2). The current national coach was already a coach at Säbener Straße and in the Allianz Arena between July 2021 and March 2023.
“It was a mistake that they fired him,” said Matthäus in the expert panel before the top game kicked off and confirmed: “My favorite is Julian Nagelsmann. He is from Munich. I think his children live here. His family is here.” But: The record national player believes that there are one or more skeptics in the Munich management team.

) would be here in Munich tomorrow,” said Matthäus on Sky: “When six men have to make a decision, there will always be different opinions.” The 63-year-old Franke was playing on that new sports director Max Eberl, sports director Christoph Freund, board boss Jan-Christian Dreesen, president Herbert Hainer as well as the two former bosses and current supervisory board members Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
Nagelsmann's contract with the German Football Association (DFB) ends after the home European Championships in 2024, meaning the 36-year-old from Upper Bavaria would even be available for free in the summer. “I believe that FC Bayern will always have great opportunities with many coaches. But now no longer with Xabi Alonso and no longer with Sebastian Hoeneß,” Matthäus continued. Sebastian Hoeneß, the nephew of honorary president Uli Hoeneß, is playing a furious season as coach of VfB Stuttgart with the Swabians. But: The Munich native recently extended his contract with the third-placed team until the summer of 2027.
There are certainly one or two people who are not in favor of it. Otherwise he would be here in Munich in the office tomorrow.

So who should judge it? Matthäus believes that an Italian doesn't have the worst chances of getting involved with the German record champions. We're talking about Antonio Conte. “I can imagine that Kalle Rummenigge would want him. Because: He is a big Italy fan,” explained Matthäus, who played for Inter Milan between 1988 and 1992 and therefore lived in northern Italy. Rummenigge had also recently played for Inter between 1984 and 1987.
The 54-year-old Conte coached the Milanese team between 2019 and 2021. The southern Italian was also coach of Chelsea FC and - quite successfully - at Juventus Turin. With “Juve” he won the Scudetto three times between 2012 and 2014, and Conte also became Italian champion with Internazionale (2021). The Italian coach has been without a job since the end of his coaching stint at Tottenham Hotspur (November 2021 to March 2023).
