After the defeat against Dortmund, FC Bayern can finally give up the championship. But the Champions League is also in danger – Max Eberl is alarmed.

Munich – The German championship is becoming more and more distant for FC Bayern. After the 0:2 (0:1) in the classic against Borussia Dortmund and the 2:1 last minute win by league leaders Bayer Leverkusen shortly before, the gap to the top is already 13 points. Bayern have probably long since ticked off their twelfth championship title in a row.

Rather, there is a fear on Säbener Strasse of losing qualification for the Champions League on the home stretch. The new sports director Max Eberl said for the first time what no one had dared to say before - and perhaps didn't want to admit.

FC Bayern is suddenly worried about the Champions League: Eberl looks deep

The 2-0 defeat in the classic was already the fifth defeat of the season, weak FC Bayern were humiliated by Dortmund. It's forbidden to talk about the championship at the moment - quite the opposite. Coach Thomas Tuchel already congratulated Leverkusen on their trophy. Eberl doesn't want to go that far as long as there is still a theoretical chance. However, as a precaution, the new sports director is looking backwards.

“I think you do that when it’s definite. There's no need to hide the fact that it was a big step for Leverkusen today," said Eberl after the game in the mixed zone and issued a warning to the entire club: "And that we currently have a significantly greater gap forward than ( ...), let's take a look in the rearview mirror and see what's actually happening. We should do our homework and win our games to secure the Champions League.” Rumms! FC Bayern not in the premier class next season? An absolute worst-case scenario for Munich.

If FC Bayern continues like this, the Champions League will be tight

Eberl is right. While the gap to league leaders Leverkusen has grown to 13 points with seven games to go, the lead in fifth place is now only ten points. Bayern can still count themselves lucky: If Leipzig hadn't made a mistake in the 0-0 draw against Mainz, they would have only been eight points ahead.

The situation is alarming. If the team continues to fluctuate in its performance, a fall in the table cannot be ruled out: participation in the Champions League is shaky. In addition to Eberl, the Bayern stars also criticize in general: Müller and Kimmich had clear words after the classic. FC Bayern is only sixth in the second half of the season. From the last seven Bundesliga games there were only ten points with three defeats - a rate that is not enough to qualify for the Champions League on your own.

Champions League in danger: Max Eberl sounds the alarm at FC Bayern

Eberl recognized the danger long ago and took the players to task after the defeat against BVB. “That was my first German Classico, and it just wasn’t enough for me. Too little energy, too little will,” rumbled the Lower Bavarian. Head coach Thomas Tuchel exempted Eberl from his criticism: “You can of course throw the next coach out and say: again the next coach and again the next coach. “So there are still the boys on the pitch who have to perform,” he said.

The 50-year-old added that we know “what quality the boys have, but we should represent Bayern Munich as we should.” Ideally next Saturday when we go to Heidenheim. Jamal Musiala, who probably did not suffer any injuries after the brutal foul against himself, is likely to be there again.
