Security is a big issue in the run-up to the European Championships. The German Lawyers' Association warns against excessive interference with fundamental rights.

Munich - On June 14th, the German national team opens the 2024 European Championship with the opening game against Scotland in Munich's Allianz Arena. Football fans across the continent are looking forward to the tournament in Germany. But security is also a big issue in advance, but the German Lawyers' Association (DAV) has some points of criticism.

After the attack in Moscow: Do we need more security at the Euro?

On March 22, the world looked to Moscow in shock. Before the start of a concert, terrorists broke into the “Crocus City Hall” concert hall in the Russian capital, shot people indiscriminately and set a fire. More than 130 people were killed in the attack, which a branch of the Islamic State would later claim responsibility for.

The attack also sent the Western world into turmoil. Especially in Germany, where the European Championships will be held in the summer, people want to guarantee safety at major events. Fan safety was already an important issue before the tragedy in Moscow. In the course of this, a number of measures such as data retention, state trojans and biometric video surveillance were discussed.

German lawyers' association warns in a press release of a “significant interference with fundamental rights”

The German Lawyers' Association (DAV) was extremely critical of the potentially new measures. “It must be remembered that each of the surveillance measures put forward in itself is associated with a significant interference with the fundamental rights of those affected,” said lawyer Nikolaos Gazeas in a press release from the DAV on Tuesday.

The communication also states that “the application of a whole range of such measures could come dangerously close to 360° surveillance”. In particular, biometric video surveillance was viewed with great concern by the DAV Security Committee.

DAV warns about the EM measures

In its press release, the DAV acted as a warning hand for the potential measures. “The DAV warns against establishing instruments that are regularly confiscated by the constitutional courts for good reasons,” it says. “Instead of playing on the population's fears in order to implement drastic measures, a sense of proportion is needed when it comes to striking a balance between security and freedom,” the DAV explained its concerns.

While Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has recently repeatedly pointed out that the German authorities are well positioned when it comes to security issues surrounding the tournament, Federal Justice Minister Marco Buschmann warned of negative side effects. “It is clear that every summer fairy tale has its dark side. “It’s not just happy fans who come to us,” he said, pointing out that “a football festival of joy is not a festival of naivety.”
