The ax has fallen for Jonas Vingegaard. Three hours after his terrible fall during the 4th stage of the Basque Country, the Dane suffered from a “broken collarbone” in the words of his Visma-Lease a bike team. Examinations also revealed “several broken ribs”. The duration of his absence is not yet known.
“It was a violent accident, but fortunately he is stable and conscious. Tests at the hospital revealed he had a broken collarbone and several broken ribs. He remains hospitalized as a precautionary measure,” his team explained in a press release.
A compromised Grande Boucle?
35.9 km from the finish in Legutio, Jonas Vingegaard crashed violently like around ten runners. At full speed, the Dane slid down the right flank before violently hitting the cement drain. After spending many minutes in a lateral safety position on the side of the road, his back bleeding, he was finally evacuated on a stretcher into the ambulance, with a neck brace and a respiratory assistance system. With a broken collarbone and several ribs, preparation for his own succession on the Grande Boucle is compromised.

Also involved in the fall, we are still waiting for news from 2022 world champion Remco Evenepoel, who was evacuated after also touching his shoulder. Primoz Roglic, leader of the general classification, also retired but left in a Bora-Hansgrohe car, thumbs up towards the cameras.
