In the NHL, fighting is an integral part of the American spectacle, and is a tradition. However, it is extremely rare to see this start after only... two seconds of play, just enough time for the referee to put the puck in play before tempers get heated and the gloves fall on the ice.
However, on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, this is the scenario that spectators witnessed at the derby between the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers. Two franchises which, due to their geographical proximity, hardly appreciate each other. What was obvious to everyone when Rangers forward Matt Rempe and Kurtis MacDermid from New Jersey came to blows, quickly imitated by a number of their comrades.
An animosity linked to the recent past according to the American press, which recalls that the same two players had already almost clashed on March 11 but at the time, Rempe had not responded to MacDermid's provocations. Following this general brawl, four players from each team were suspended for two minutes. And note that the coaches were also not far from fighting. Looking forward to the next duel between the two teams.
