Rather, the 46-year-old ex-football official is facing allegations of corruption. Rubiales is suspected of receiving illegal commissions when the Spanish Super Cup was moved to Saudi Arabia. The Spaniard is accused of, among other things, money laundering and corruption, which the 46-year-old rejects. The Super Cup took place in the oil-rich Gulf state for the first time in 2020.
Rubiales was picked up at Madrid-Barajas airport immediately after returning from a stay in the Dominican Republic, a Spanish police spokesman said. Investigators said that the 46-year-old got off the plane accompanied by police officers before being questioned in the airport building.
