Will Julian Nagelsmann remain national coach after the European Championships? A lot is likely to happen at the DFB soon. Rudi Völler's future could also be clarified by then.
Munich – Will he stay or won’t he stay?
Julian Nagelsmann can decide before the home European Championships in 2024 how and whether he will continue as national coach after the tournament. “He has a lot of inquiries,” confirmed Rudi Völler on Wednesday evening before the semi-final in the DFB Cup between Fortuna Düsseldorf and Bayer Leverkusen (0:4).
Future of national coach Julian Nagelsmann? “He has a lot of requests”
It's no secret that the DFB would like to continue working with Nagelmann. The problem: FC Bayern is apparently also concerned with the 36-year-old and is thinking about bringing him back to Säbener Straße.
In addition, Liverpool FC and FC Barcelona are also looking for a new trainer for the coming season. So it's not an easy undertaking for the DFB to tie Nagelsmann to the association beyond the European Championships.

DFB plan for after the European Championship: Spectacular Völler turnaround?
“That would be our great wish,” said sports director Völler, hoping for an emotional response. “Training the national team is something special,” said the 1990 world champion: “It is the most important team in Germany, you noticed that at the two international matches when this euphoria arose. I think he likes that. We need to discuss this calmly. He knows the signals that we would like to continue with him.”
The Nagelsmann/Völler duo in particular seem to be in perfect harmony over the past few months. Exciting question: How closely is the future of the coach linked to that of the sports director? Actually, Völler's plan was only to stay in office until after the European Championships, when he took up an interim position at the DFB in February 2023 as a kind of successor to Oliver Bierhof.

Will Rudi Völler remain DFB sports director? “I like it at the moment, let’s wait and see”
But now a spectacular turnaround could be achieved. “I like it at the moment, let’s wait and see,” said the 63-year-old meaningfully on Wednesday evening.
So it's quite possible that Völler will fill the role of sports director for a longer period of time - and can convince Nagelsmann to remain national coach beyond the European Championships.
There will definitely be a decision regarding the national coach in the coming weeks. Julian Nagelsmann had already explained this before the friendly matches against France (2:0) and the Netherlands (2:1). It cannot be ruled out that Rudi Völler will also remain in office after the home European Championships.
