Julian Nagelsmann practically already has his DFB squad together for the European Football Championship. Vitaly Janelt plays no role in this.

London – Kai Havertz, Pascal Groß and Bernd Leno: These are the only three Premier League legionnaires that national coach Julian Nagelsmann recently nominated for the German Football Association. Havertz and Groß should also have secured their ticket for the upcoming European Football Championship in Germany, Leno is in a fight with Oliver Baumann and Kevin Trapp for the third goalkeeper position.

But there are other German players who are currently playing in England and are impressing with good performances there. Timo Werner, for example, is one of them: The Leipzig player was loaned to Tottenham in the winter and has since appeared ten times (as of April 6th) in the Premier League. Balance sheet: Two goals, three assists. Arguments for the European Championship? Possibly - but Werner's performances in the recent past simply haven't been consistent enough. This distinguishes him from another German in the Premier League: Vitaly Janelt.

The Hamburg native is relatively unknown to the general football audience in this country. On the island, however, he is a long-running favorite in central midfield: In the current season, Janelt was in the starting line-up for Brentford FC in 30 of 31 Premier League games. Since moving from VfL Bochum to west London in October 2020, he has played 154 games for the Bees. He played a key role in the promotion in his debut season and even scored an important goal in the playoff semi-final second leg. A few weeks later he became European champion with the German U21 national team.

Janelt quickly became a central part of Brentford. Nickname: pressing machine. The 25-year-old is characterized by his intense approach and his game intelligence. Thanks to him, we should be able to stay in the league again this season in what is probably the best league in the world.

Enough arguments for the German national team? Not at all. And you can't even blame national coach Julian Nagelsmann for not being nominated last March. Because in the central midfield, in Janelt's position, the competition is gigantic. Returnee Toni Kroos, plus the mentioned Pascal Groß, the biting Leverkusen Robert Andrich, the more offensive-minded Ilkay Gündogan. There is also the possibility of moving Joshua Kimmich from the right-back position back into the middle.

Julian Nagelsmann has many options for the European Championships: Janelt probably doesn't represent any

With whiz kid Aleksandar Pavlovic, who was nominated but had to leave due to illness, Nagelsmann lost another option. Nagelsmann did not take the experienced Leon Goretzka, like Pavlovic from FC Bayern, into account, nor did Janelt. It is difficult to imagine that the Londoner will go to the European Championships as a debutant for the senior national team - and Goretzka, for example (57 international matches), will have to stay at home to do so. Stuttgart's Angelo Stiller also provided many reasons for a nomination this season, which has so far failed to materialize.

But if Janelt continues to deliver consistently, Nagelsmann – or the future national coach – will no longer be able to get past the midfielder (market value: 22 million euros). After all, Kroos (34), Gündogan (33) and Groß (32) are not getting any younger.
