Tactics expert Markus Brunnschneider explains how Bayern can defeat Arsenal in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Munich - Because of the good Oktoberfest. In recent years, Bayern have usually prevailed confidently when they met Arsenal FC in the knockout round of the Champions League. This time the Londoners are a much tougher bunch than back then. Expert Markus Brunnschneider explains in the

how the Munich team could defeat the Premier League leaders in the quarter-final first leg today (9 p.m., Prime Video)
.
“The central defenders Gabriel and William Saliba repeatedly acted very close to Erling Haaland in the 0-0 draw against Manchester City and thus won the ball. However, the defenders are particularly unpleasantly 'intrusive' when they play in a deep block. For the Munich team, this means: Opportunities can arise if Harry Kane lets himself go,” says the head of tactics and game analysis at the International Football Institute (IFI). “In situations like this, the London central defenders have recently been happy to stay in their positions. This is also a good approach for Bayern because Kane generally wants to be involved in the game and is not the classic penalty area striker.
Another opportunity could arise for the Munich team when the Londoners start up high. “Often one of the two sixes pushes high when pressing high and leaves a big hole in the center. This is made even larger by the second six, which is often also very man-oriented, and wide spaces can open up that are particularly interesting for Kane and Jamal Musiala,” said Brunnschneider.
Be careful of Arsenal's right side
However, Bayern have to be careful about Arsenal's active right side. “With Saka, who is strong at dribbling, and Ben White, who is always pushing forward offensively, as a right-back, Arsenal develops a lot of power,” explains the tactics expert, who also sees an opportunity for the unsettled FC Bayern team: “The Gunners often look for high shifts from midfield to this right side. This offensive orientation also inevitably opens up counterattack opportunities for Bayern.”
