Washington ended last night (Sunday) its worst season in history with no less than 67 losses compared to only 15 wins. The loss to Boston in the closing round of the regular season there marks a particularly difficult season, during which the team "passed" Washington of the 2000/01 and 2008/09 seasons, which ended with 63 losses.
But despite the unflattering figure, in Washington they go into the break with optimistic feelings, and believe that the best is yet to come.
"We've built the beginning of a winning culture here. We're all ready to play at any given moment, and if you're healthy you give everything on the floor," said Danny Avdia, who was content with 9 points against Boston but ended a fantastic breakout season. "Our chemistry has improved a lot. We are still young and I am sure we will improve. The season did not end as we expected in terms of the number of victories, but there is undoubtedly a feeling that an infrastructure is being built here for the future. There are great people in this organization, now we need to deepen the connection and achieve more victories next season
. Avdia, "I feel that we have played much more as a team in recent months. We could have won a few more games that were close, but there is a feeling that everyone wants the success of the other. We play much faster basketball and we have improved a lot defensively. We had some nice wins this season against good teams, so there's a lot to build on."
One of the big questions heading into the offseason is whether Brian Keefe, appointed as interim coach after the firing of Wes Anseld Jr., will continue in the role. Many Wizards players are in favor of keeping Keefe as the permanent head coach, but GM Will Dawkins will decide whether to look for another coach on the market.
"We developed a lot of toughness this season, created a competitive atmosphere and learned about the process from which we become a really good team," Keefe himself continued the optimistic line at the end of last night's game. "We still have a way to go, but I believe we laid the right foundations on the way there. Even today we played until the last minute, and came back from a big deficit. I am very proud of our players for this season."
