Tips for virtual reality games: buckle up for the speed rush!

2019-09-15T07:34:31.106Z

Diving into other worlds that forget reality - these are the promises of virtual reality games. Fascinating how well some games use that. Here are four that our author Carsten Görig has come to love.

After the first hype comes the disillusionment: Virtual Reality (VR) has not yet become the hoped for huge success. For me personally, this is mainly due to the escort technique.

  • I have to wire myself first, then say goodbye to reality with oversized glasses.
  • I can only get into VR if I am sure nobody is in the apartment. For the kids, it would be a welcome occasion to scare me right. Best, of course, when I'm on a monster hunt.
  • I wear glasses, which is unfortunately not really compatible with any VR glasses - none of them is comfortable. And for an hour playing contact lenses in the eye fumble? No thanks!

Still, ever since I first wore a prototype of the Oculus goggles - a converted ski goggles that made me look a bit like a crazy professor - and walked through "DOOM 3", VR inspires me. I love to be somewhere else - but only for a short time. After half an hour, it will be exhausting, even if I am not bad.

I use a Playstation VR glasses. That's a good compromise between performance, price and software. All I need is a Playstation 4, which I have standing around anyway. Other VR goggles like Oculus or Vive may have a much better picture, but need a high-performance computer that I do not have. I can therefore recommend without reservation only the Playstation VR glasses.

Among the many games I've seen so far, there are a few favorites to which I always like to return.

Rez Infinite

"Rez" is actually an old game, the first time it appeared in 2001 for Sega Dreamcast and Playstation 2, since then I have been a fan and even after his creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi hardly been disappointed. Be it the puzzle game "Lumines" or "Child of Eden", a psychedelic hippie ode of sounds and images and successor to "Rez". This is dedicated to Wassily Kandinsky and a mixture of techno, flashing colors and abstract structures, but at the core a classic Railshooter.

So a game in which one is driven through a level and shoots as possible everything that moves on the screen. In "Rez", the data node, synapses or computer viruses are not evil machine gun soldiers. "Rez Infinite" is the same game, higher resolution and broadcast in VR. Here I can look around the world, receive even more stimuli that go directly into the brain and make the game seem even more intense. Two levels at a stretch usually suffice - after all, at some point you want to return to reality.

What's this? A game that will permanently confuse and redirect the synapses, an intoxication of colors, sound and rhythm.

Suitable for: Anyone who expects something different in VR than fantasy worlds. And of course for "Tron" fans.

Enhance Games' Rez Infinite is available for download from the Playstation Store, also available through Steam for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

Wipeout Omega Collection

When playing with attached glasses you should not stand. You do not see anything and will soon stumble. Not for nothing were three people around me at my first VR test. They should hold me in case I falter. So the better are games in which you also sit in the game. In the cockpit of a spaceplane, perhaps, in a race car or a futuristic glider, racing high-speed races against other gliders. In "Wipeout" so.

This is a game series that has its origins on the first Playstation. At that time, she absorbed the English club culture of the 90's and combined electronic beats with techno-inspired design. The races were fast and difficult - and still are. Under the VR goggles, the stomach sinks over and over as you fly down an edge and at a breathtaking speed down a steep track. "Wipeout" is the game of speed noise - and technically excellent for VR implemented.

What's this? A racing game in which you glide over a racetrack with gliders and throw off opponents with different weapons. Super fast and futuristic.

Suitable for: Anyone who wants to live out their speed rush in the game rather than on the highway.

Blood and Truth

Really good action games for VR, there are only a few. "Blood and Truth" is one of them. Above all, I like the brashly story told in the gangster milieu of London - and the handling of the weapons, reloading by shaking the controllers, the ease with which you sometimes get thrown more ammunition. A short excerpt from "Blood and Truth" was shown very early at events where Playstation VR was shown - and already there I wanted to play the game again and again. Fortunately, the finished game is still a lot of fun - and can play great in several episodes.

What's this? A gangster story as a first person shooter, hardboiled and very British.

Suitable for: All those who want to play around really nice and as characters do not necessarily need the typical super soldier.

transference

The fascinating thing about VR is the ability to be in a different environment and change perspective within a short amount of time. "Transference" plays with this idea and lets me explore a house and its surroundings from the perspective of different family members. In every view, other things come to the fore. The mother's musical instruments are important, the child his toys. And the father has managed to transfer the entire family to a computer. Which, unfortunately, only allows unclear conclusions about his state of mind and the whereabouts of his family.

"Transference" is a psycho thriller in VR, co-developed by Elijah "Frodo" Wood, who gets along without shocking moments and yet creates an ever denser horror. And even though the game is sometimes illogical and cumbersome, not technically up-to-date: it's one of the VR games I'm glad to have played. Because it dares experiments, is brave and shows why VR can integrate completely new ideas into games.

What's this? A psychological thriller that Elijah Wood has worked on. Horror that gets along without cheap shocks.

Suitable for: Players who take the time to unravel a story, want to have a dark mood and forgive some mistakes for an experiment.
