Berlin: Diesel driving bans are delayed because the signs are missing

2019-09-20T10:04:39.816Z

Since the beginning of September, traffic restrictions for old diesel cars have been in effect in Berlin. Their enforcement now had to be postponed - indefinitely. It's all very difficult.

The diesel driving bans in parts of Berlin are delayed. The signs, which are to warn the diesel drivers in Berlin in the districts middle and Neukölln on a passage restriction, obviously have long delivery times.

In July, the Red-Red-Green Senate had decided not only to extend Tempo-30 zones, but also to introduce driving bans for older diesel vehicles with the Euro 5 emission standard and below in eight streets in Berlin. A necessary measure to comply with the permissible EU limit of 40 micrograms of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) per cubic meter of air. All eight affected sections of the road are located in the districts of Mitte and Neukölln. In early September, the passage restrictions should actually come into force.

So far, however, succeeded in the district Neukölln not to provide the corresponding prohibition signs and mount. "The signs are custom-made and the ordering process takes much longer than with standard orders such as Tempo 30 signs," says a spokesman for Neukölln district office. In addition, it would be necessary first of all to find a company that could mount the signs and also undertake appropriate underground work.

Delivery date not foreseeable

In the district Neukölln 25 prohibition signs are to be set up, whose acquisition and assembly costs around 40,000 euros. "Background of this very high sum is the fact that they are very large signs, for the extensive groundwork for the foundations are necessary," says the spokesman. In addition, the signs would have to be built partly in very exposed places - such as on a bridge of the Berlin Ringbahn.

There are also problems in the district of Mitte. There are even around 200 prohibition signs must be set up. Transitional solutions or temporary signs are not provided. In fact, the driving restrictions are only after the signs are mounted. When exactly that will be, is still open. "It is currently not foreseeable until when the preliminary work will be completed," said the spokesman. According to this, a construction company was commissioned this week to submit a detailed timetable in the next few days.
