Andreas Scheuer: 900 million more for cycling

2019-10-02T15:08:22.210Z

The Federal Ministry of Transport wants to invest more in cycling - by 2023 around 1.4 billion euros. In traffic, however, twice as much money should flow.

Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer has announced that by 2023 he will spend around 900 million euros on cycling in Germany. According to the plans of the Federal Government, the Ministry of Transport would have a total of around six billion euros more available for climate protection, said the CSU politician. Earlier, the Cabinet had decided on the financial plans. The focus should be on cycling, the railways and the promotion of climate-friendly propulsion systems and fuels. All in all, around 1.4 billion euros will go into cycling by 2023.

"For the first time, we will also promote local and local infrastructure projects," said Scheuer. The aim is to divide the streets more equitable and to create more space for the bike. Special programs should be launched this year. "We are also working on better cycle paths for freight bikes and bicycle parking garages at railway stations."

Three billion euros for CO2-free drives

Also bicycle bridges or tunnels as well as the development of bicycle roads should be promoted. Changes to the Highway Code, which should give cyclists more space and security, have already been initiated.

The cornerstones of the Federal Government's climate protection program also stipulate that the federal government should invest more money in rail and public transport, as well as promote the conversion of bus fleets to operating on batteries, hydrogen or biogas. A VAT rebate on tickets in long-distance rail traffic should make this cheaper.

"We will invest over three billion euros in the tank and charging infrastructure for cars and trucks with CO2-free drives," Scheuer announced. For coordination, a national control center will be set up in his ministry. In 2019, a "master plan" should be available. Commercial vehicles with alternative drive systems are to be promoted through a purchase premium for which the ministry plans to provide one billion euros.
