VW wants to bring an e-car with 250 kilometers range for less than 20,000 euros on the market - interested parties, however, have to wait a bit.

The automaker VW wants within five years with a new range of cheap electric cars reach as many customers. "We see mobility as a civil right, it must be affordable - and that is also a task of Volkswagen," said VW CEO Herbert Diess the "Automobilwoche". VW chief strategist Michael Jost told the magazine that the company is working on an e-city car, which should cost less than 20,000 euros. "We want to bring such a vehicle 2023/2024 on the market." The range should therefore be enough to 220 to 250 kilometers.

First, however, is at VW, the market launch of the E-Model ID.3 with a higher range of about 300 kilometers, which will be offered for around 30,000 euros. The first deliveries are planned for spring 2020. Although the VW Group already has a few electric cars in its program - such as the Audi e-tron or e-sports car Porsche Taycan. A purely electrical mass production at a lower entry price is still missing.

Between smart and golf

An electric car with a range of around 250 kilometers and a price of less than 20,000 euros would actually close a gap in the offer. Although small electric cars such as the e.Go Life 60 or the Smart EQ Fortwo are already available today for around 20,000 euros, their range is only around 150 kilometers. The slightly larger Renault ZOE comes for a price of 21,900 euros, although up to 300 kilometers wide - but here comes the battery for around 8,000 euros added.

But this gap in the electric car market will probably also want to close Volkswagen's current electric competitors. Renault's ZOE and the PSA sister models Peugeot e-208 and Opel Corsa-e offer similar values as Volkswagen's current electric hope ID.3: Approximately 300 kilometers range for almost 30,000 euros. And also the other manufacturers will probably bring a price range lower competition models on the market.
