Ridesharing service: Clevershuttle ends offer in three major cities

With hydrogen cars they wanted to conquer the Fahrdienstmarkt - now Clevershuttle retires after four years in Germany, at least partially. Ironically, the mobility turnaround was the company's fatal.

The service provider Clevershuttle has discontinued its offer in Hamburg, Frankfurt am Main and Stuttgart. "From now on, customers in these cities can no longer order rides," said the Berlin-based company on Monday. For the 330 drivers and employees affected, new jobs are to be found, among others, at Deutsche Bahn, which owns 80 percent of Clevershuttle.

"The decision was not easy for us, but under the current circumstances, an economic operation is not possible," it said in an email to customers in Hamburg. In the Hanseatic city about two-thirds of the places fall away. Six months ago, VW's Moia service had started operating there. A spokesman for Clevershuttle told the NDR that there is "very strong competition" in Hamburg, without referring directly to Moia.

In Frankfurt, in turn, a lack of approval is the main reason for the withdrawal, said a spokesman. Without this, no profit could be made with the service. In Stuttgart, there was only a permit for certain times of the day, so that the service did not count.

The vehicles will now be used in the five German cities in which Clevershuttle is still active. "The operation in Berlin, Kiel, Leipzig, Dresden and Munich continues normally," it said. Business at these locations is developing positively. At the end of November, the company also wants to go to Düsseldorf in Dusseldorf.

Self-experiment: This is how Moia strikes herself in everyday life

Customers who still have credit for the car service can redeem this, according to the company in the remaining cities, or be reimbursed by Clevershuttle.

Since its founding in 2015, Clevershuttle has been offering what is known as ridesharing, where several passengers with a similar destination are collected on the track and share the ride. Customers generally use the service with an app for the smartphone and corresponding registration. Enter the start and destination there and get information about route, price and location of the pickup. This is usually at the next street corner or even on your own doorstep. The vehicle fleet consists of electric and hydrogen cars.
