From the small car to the SUV: These electric cars come 2020

2019-10-16T02:35:30.740Z

Next year buyers will have an unprecedented selection of e-cars. They range from small cars to SUVs. The Stromer come from Germany, from Europe - and from China.

The excuse that there would not be enough choice for e-cars is no longer valid from 2020 at the latest. Almost all major automakers then come with electrically powered models on the market.

However, this does not happen voluntarily. From 2020, the CO2 emissions of all cars of one manufacturer, the so-called fleet consumption, must be on average 95 g / km. The corporations are still a long way from that, which is why they are facing severe fines. They can amount to several hundred million euros, sometimes more than a billion euros, depending on sales volume.

Electric cars are currently regarded as the most effective way to reduce the CO2 balance in the fleet, because by 2020 the Stromer will still be factoring in the balance sheet. That means: An e-vehicle (emission: 0 grams of CO2 per kilometer) compensates for two large SUVs, each with 190 g / km. But: It does not apply, which stands smart polished in the dealership. The number of new registrations count. The Stromer must be bought so.

The expensive heart of electric cars

But this has failed so far, currently the share of e-vehicles in Germany is below two percent. "Many customers are reluctant to change because they can not charge at home or the infrastructure of power poles is still too thin and because they are afraid that the capacity of the battery for the driving profile in everyday life is not enough," says Peter Fintl, e-mobility Expert at consulting firm Altran.

But the price is a barrier: electric cars in the small car and compact class are often twice as expensive as their conventional counterparts with internal combustion engines. Cost driver is above all the battery. "For them, the manufacturer currently has to pay the supplier about 150 euros per kilowatt hour," says Stefan Bratzel, head of the Center of Automotive Management (CAM) in Bergisch Gladbach. Power alone for a 58 kWh battery, as it is installed, for example, in the ID.3 from Volkswagen, just under 9000 euros.

In order not to let the sales prices for e-cars get completely out of hand, the carmakers want to distribute their billionaire electrical architecture to as many models as possible. VW has developed the MEB, the modular electric drive kit. It is based not only on the ID models, but also the Stromer of Skoda, Audi and Seat. And even other manufacturers build their electric cars based on the MEB. First major buyer is Ford: The Cologne will come from about 2023 with a compact electric vehicle based on the MEB on the market.

A small, expensive Honda

The French PSA Group has a similar strategy. The electric cars of its brands Citroen, DS, Opel and Peugeot are all based on the same platform, called E-CMP. The first offspring of this corporate electric DNA are the Corsa-e, the Peugeot e-208 and e-2008 and the DS3 Crossback E-Tense.

Even in the high-priced segment is diligently cooperated. Audi and Porsche share the J1 platform for their three models Taycan and e-tron GT as well as for Taycan Sport Turismo. Both brands are already working intensively on a new architecture called PPE. The acronym stands for Premium Platform Electric and will of course be used by the entire Group. It will also benefit Bentley.

One-on-one dares Honda. Without a cooperation partner was the Honda E. Perhaps he is so expensive in terms of its size and range, advised. To argue 33,850 euros for only 200 kilometers range, would be difficult for the seller. The competition continues and costs less.
