Stiftung Warentest: Many music players for children are too loud

2019-10-23T09:19:57.864Z

Many children love radio plays and audiobooks - and therefore often have matching players in their room. In the test, however, only a single has done well.

On small game figures, on a memory card or on a CD on CD: radio plays and books are coming to the children's room in many ways today. In order to hear something, it still needs a player. But no matter whether that is still a CD player or even a modern music player without a CD drive: Many devices have significant weaknesses, warns the Stiftung Warentest in the current issue of the magazine "test".

The experts have tested 13 music players with and without a CD drive. One result of their investigations: Eleven of the tested devices are clearly too loud for tender child ears - at least in combination with headphones. Three problem candidates also have too much pressure on the built-in speakers.

Two CD players even achieve a volume of more than 85 decibels (db). According to the foundation, this is far more than the standard for children's toys permits. These products therefore receive the overall grade "deficient".

Other devices score better, but only one candidate is rated as "good": The "Hörbert" by Witzki plays radio plays and music from memory cards, is not too loud and well-made. But with 239 euros he is also by far the most expensive device in the test.

For the other candidates, it is only enough for the grade "sufficient", a total of four are even "poor". In addition to the volume level, the foundation criticizes, for example, the battery or battery life, also processing and operability are sometimes only "sufficient" or even "poor". In one of the CD players, the testers also found the pollutant naphthalene in the control buttons.
