After the rejection of Chile, a new venue for the World Climate Change Conference had to be found: Now the UN has agreed on Spain.

Problem solved: The United Nations decided in an emergency meeting on Friday that the upcoming global climate change conference COP25 will take place in Madrid. After Chile canceled the meeting scheduled for December at very short notice, a new venue had to be found.

She is pleased to announce that the responsible body has agreed to hold the two-week summit meeting of climate diplomacy in the Spanish capital from 2 to 13 December, United Nations Climate Chief Patricia Espinosa said Friday. This is the originally scheduled time for the conference.

The climate conference of the UN takes place every year. It serves to promote the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement. Last year more than 20,000 participants traveled to Katowice, Poland. At this year's meeting, among other things, rules for the implementation of the Paris Climate Change Treaty will be found and agreements for a fraud-proof international trading system for CO2 certificates will be made.

Spain's prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, had suggested Madrid as the venue on Thursday after Chile canceled the summit this week over the heavy protests that had recently shaken the country.

The riots killed at least 20 people. The trigger was the increase in prices for subway tickets. On Monday, however, Piñera signed the corresponding decrees and declared the statewide state of emergency for the time being for the time being.

"Given the difficult circumstances that our country has experienced in recent weeks, our government has decided not to hold the Apec Summit in November and the COP25 in December," said President Sebastián Piñera. The government must devote itself primarily to the pacification and the preparation of reforms that would meet the demands of the wave of protest.
